Driver in Wednesday Night Crash Charged with DWI

Thomas Seaton, 45, of Coram charged with driving drunk in crash that hospitalized two at dangerous Miller Place Road-Route 25 intersection.

According to Suffolk County Police a man involved in a Wednesday night car crash on Route 25A in Miller Place, which resulted in hospitalizations of two individuals, was charged with DWI following the accident.

Thomas Seaton, 45, of Coram, was charged according to police, after his 2004 Jeep struck another car at the intersection of 25A and Miller Place Road.

The accident shut down the stretch on Route 25A for a half hour, and the Miller Place Fire Department was forced to remove one of the victims from a car using the "jaws of life."

One commenter Miller Place-Rocky Point Patch said his mother was on the receiving end of the crash, and that she will need multiple surgeries to recover. However an email to the commenter verifying the statement was unreturned.

An assistant chief with the Miller Place Fire Department called the intersection on Wednesday night "one of the busiest for accidents in Suffolk County."

While countywide information was not immediately available, a 2010 study of Mt. Sinai through Shoreham cited Miller Place as particularly accident-prone.

"The number of vehicular crashes is high in Miller Place relative to the other hamlets in the study area," the report states.

It goes on to single out the Miller Place Road-Route 25A intersection as one of the most - if not the most - dangerous intersections in the area. According to the report, the scene of Wednesday night's accident was host to the most injuries during the study's window period: 22 reported from Aug. 1, 2006 through July 31, 2009, out of 53 total accidents.

Improved speed enforcement and traffic signaling on Route 25A were two suggestions offered in the report to prevent future accidents.

What we need is a few more deaths so the state will get off their lazy ass and do something. Why not sue the state for unsafe roads.

Why in the world would they allow right turns on red when they have left trun arrows. Also, the exit from 7/11 and the gas station is right at the corner. It does not take a brain surgeon to see that these are very dangerous issues. How many deaths and injuries have to happen before something is done. They should also address the Echo Avenue merge onto 25A. Why would they have green arrows from Echo that NEVER turn red. Beats me!

Echo is getting more traffic because of those avoiding Miller Place Road and Route 25A and the new "red light camera".

It was known that the Echo Ave "merge" would be problematic when the Mt Sinai housing complex was added. The whole set up is just plain weird and totally nonpredictable for people who do not live in the area. As a victim of that intersection 48 years ago who lived to tell about it (crossing from 25A onto Echo) the light has helped somewhat but coming from the opposite direction still leaves a lot to be desired. I bear the scars from that accident as does my mother who was hospitalized for MONTHS following it. Even SITTING out there on 25A waiting for the light to make the left is dangerous because of how fast the flow of traffic is there on either side of the turning lanes - its like being a sitting duck between east and west flow.

How many accidents does it take for the road signals to be changed? The Echo problem is a no brainer with just making the light red until the left turn is going. Why allow traffic onto the road when the west bound is moving and knowing the traffic coming off Echo may want to move left to make the turn onto CR83. That's what causes a lot of mishaps. So, what do we as travelers on these roads have to do to get things changed? I agree allowing a (R) on red with traffic pulling out of businesses is also a no brainer, neither driver is looking for the other guy, they are looking only for the oncoming traffic so when all of a sudden a car is there you now slow down and the oncoming can't stop soon efough. What does it take to change a sign to NO RIGHT ON RED???? Wake up Brookhaven Highway Dept.

In the past month, or so, there have been a number of additional "No Right On Red" signs placed in the immediate locality New York Avenue and Echo Avenue...with a "red light camera", and on both sides of Miller Place Road, at the intersection of Route 25A, and on both sides of North Country Road at Echo Avenue.

As well antenna arrays, associated with "red light cameras" are at the Miller Place Road and Echo Avenue intersections...probably in anticipation of "red light cameras".
