UPDATE: Oxygen Bar to be Shut Down After Shooting

Announcement will be made at 2 p.m. to shut down bar after four people were injured in shooting early Saturday morning.

An announcement that Oxygen Bar in Rocky Point will be shut down is expected to be made at a 2 p.m. press conference at the bar Monday, according to Town spokesman Jack Krieger.

Expected to attend the press conference are Town Supervisor Mark Lesko, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and County Legislator Sarah Anker

A letter from State Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle sent to the New York State Liquor Authority stated:

"This particular nightclub is no stranger to controversy and violence. In early 2010, when the establishment was known as The Edge, a club patron was stabbed three times during an altercation. In August 2009 the club and its owners planned a wet T-shirt contest and Jell-O wrestling match. The event was cancelled after community protest.

"I know the the New York Liquor State Authority works diligently to ensure the residents of New York are protected and ask the Authority to review the status of the Oxygen Bar’s license as it relates to the safety of its patrons."

Patch will have more details from the press conference at 2 p.m. The announcement comes on the heels of a shooting early Saturday morning:

Suffolk County Police responded to a 911 call of shots being fired at Oxygen Bar night club in Rocky Point at 3:31 a.m. Saturday to find three women with gunshot wounds.

The women were transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center in a Rocky Point ambulance, Suffolk Police said. One man suffered a gunshot wound and was taken by a friend to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital before the police arrived.

Two of the women were shot in the leg and the third was shot in the foot. The man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and was also grazed by a bullet in his torso, police said.

"No arrests have been made," said Seventh Precinct Detective Sgt. John Best.  "There was a disturbance inside the bar and it was only one shooter. No injuries are life threatening. Two of the female victims were admitted to Stony Brook and two were discharged."

The night club, formerly known as The Edge but renamed to Oxygen Bar in late 2010, has a past history of incidents. On March 20, 2010, a victim was stabbed three times in an early Saturday morning altercation at the club. Police were also called for a fight at the club last February.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the shooting should contact Seventh Squad detectives at 631-852-8752 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Rocky Point really has so much to offer. This place has nothing good to offer. It is not representative of the majority of Rocky Point residents, yet it gets bad press that sends the wrong message about our town, killing our property values (and thus, the tax revenue tied to it, politicians!) It's time for our elected and civic officials to do everything within their legal authority to shut this place down.

If it were not for the "old" people working and paying taxes, respecting the rights of others and providing
for their families, "youz guyz" would not have any place to call home. But no respect is no respect and it
is obvious that there is a failure on the part of many people to allow this community to go down the tubes. When the priority is getting high and partying.. with out consequence..
People care when they see others caring.. You go to bed with the dawgs you get up with the fleas..
I have reason to believe that many of
the business owners do not live in Rocky Point but suck the revenue from it and go home elsewhere. Try to open a similiar youth oriented bar in any of their communities and see what happens..
The pine barrens would certainly be remote enough.

Agreed, as I understand it the owner, Bobby Gerson has been dumping on Rocky Point from the bluffs of Miller Place for years.

Bottom line, thats just wrong and I am furious with our electeds for not pulling the liquor license or having the SCPD shut this turd down sooner once they saw that his intentions were poor.
The only one I dont completely fault on this is Jane...she lives here (and like her or not) is as invested in Rocky Point as we are. The rest of them suck and are as lazy as the day is long. Blatantly exploiting us via indirect campaign contributions from the comforts of Shoreham, Mount Sinai or the Three Villages is just plain wrong.

As anyone whos lost an election here will tell you, lose Rocky Point and you'll lose the race.
We will see the dead wood at the polls again shortly and I am certain we wont forget whos let us down.

Time to shine team lazy.Theres still time to redeem yourselves. Anything less than immediate closure will be viewed as YOUR failure in RP.

Theres way too many good things happening and positive business momentum here to allow one idiot to spoil.

Get it done.

Thanks Localmom,

Yes, they have a choice, its called "Hero or Zero". They'll either get on or go under the Bus.
We know exactly who these Politicians are and (thanks to the internet) we now know who they aren't.

This is absolutely no time for lazy, old guard career politicians ducking and weaving in and out of stupid little league, eagle scout, ribbon cutting photo ops and fund raisers. We see right though that BS in Rocky Point, we vote on results and we need real action RIGHT NOW.

My message to team lazy is get it done (you can even spike the ball at the end) or better be prepared to suffer dire political consequences and significant public embarrassment.

I promise you...we are not screwing around with this.

Oh yes we vote Localmom, and to Billy's point...you're damn right we care.
We care a lot.

Why if that building(as a bar) has been trouble before, would we allow it to be opened again, as a bar? It keeps re-opening, with a new name, same trouble. Why not make it something that would bring life to the area, during daylight hours, instead of when most of us are asleep?

RP does have a lot to offer, but it's being overshadowed by negativity. There is nothing that the Hamptons has on Rocky Point, except for the "town" itself. Our beaches are just as beautiful, and our vibe here is warm are welcoming. Our town commerce, however, isn't beautiful or inviting. Tattoo parlors, bars and nail salons aren't enough to encourage people to visit and shop.

Sayville would never allow a bar like Oxygen to exist on Main St., so why are we allowing such a place to exist on our Main St? Because we set the standards low for ourselves and our town, and we accept what is really unacceptable(Oxygen).

It's time to expect and demand more. We can do better.

I speak not for Port Jeffersn, Miller Place, Mount Sinai, Sound Beach or Shoreham. I speak of Rocky Point. Granted, there are problems..But, Rocky Point has sadly neglected it's youth and their needs, to focus on the me's of this community.
Read in between the lines of the Grafitti on every stop sign. Are the words of the profits written on subway walls..What was once a sleepy summer community has evolved into a forceful community on the North Shore. A community to be reckoned with, a community that votes and a community, certainly with a voice.
We indeed have a much coveted resourse in beach, a natural treasure. It is really up to us to keep this place, our place. to keep it for the generations of today and tomorrow.. No one, No one I say, to whom I have spoke too, wants to see this place not succeed. A way to do that, is for us to meet the needs of our community collectively. Voice on I say.

The 1 % of our country, namely today's youth are those that serve and protect the very ideals and beliefs
we take for granted here on the sleeply little north shore community to which you refer. I am talking about young people in service to this nation, by the way, it is they, who listen to hop hip or hip hop music. Why do we gotta say that they are not entitled to have a place, have a say. Might it be becasue they don't
vote and they don't pay taxes. Is it because they can't find work.. or is it that you just think they
want to be burdens to their family and cause problems for your town. Hear That..

Show me one, respectable, active military person who frequents that dive. As the saying goes: "Show me your friends, and I'll show you your future". I'm having trouble finding your point. This issue is not about the musical preferences of an individual, or even of a group. This issue is about a threat to our community and to the very safety of that "1% of our country" that a place as dangerous as Oxygen poses. What "needs" are you referring to when it comes to our "youth" that you say are being neglected? If any true "needs" are being neglected, then it is the responsibility of that "youth's" parents (and if need be the community) to correct the situation. If, however, the "needs" to which you refer are simply gimme's of an entitled generation, then count this "me" out.

Jenn Jorgensen

10:41 am on Monday, May 9, 2011

I don't think it's fair to label people as not respectable because they frequent Oxygen. People like different styles of music and I'm sure many were there that night to hear the artist perform, not to make trouble. Some, were there for trouble, obviously, but not all.
And it's also not fair to blame everything on parents either. People are people. You can raise your child in the hopes that they will be who you hope them to be, and they may decide to be someone very different. Everyone does the best they can.
That building is not working out to be a safe club, so make it something else. Whatever is going on there, isn't safe. Let's face it, someone walked into that building with a loaded gun. If your going to run a club, maybe you need to also run the crowd through a metal detector.
Whatever is going on there, isn't working. Stop blaming, and start thinking of a better plan.

Who is blaming parents? I am certainly not labeling all who like a certain type of music. I do, however, feel that, given the high incidence of violence at Oxygen in such a short period of time, it does attract a particular group of people that do not exactly have the best interest of our neighbors in mind. Read my posts again. In fact, I think you and I agree on the most important issue: the club that is attracting the wrong element and is dangerous as it is. Part of finding a better plan is determining exactly what the problem is. It's just a simple fact. You can't develop a solution without determining what the problem is and the factors that contribute (blame) to it. We can't be so politically correct as to ignore glaring components of the problem or we will never never fix it.

Having grown up and been a member of SWR's first graduating class of 78. I as a whole generation of McCarricks my age have witnessed the decline that has become Broadway in Rocky Point. The Oxygen Bar is just the straw that is breaking the camel's back. Broadway used to be a spot of local small business pride. Let's not just blame Oxygen Bar. From the old Drugstore (post office) from the North to the Oxygen Bar to the South the whole main street is a mess. The 25A bypass did a lot of damage to the Rocky Point main street area. If you are going to want to straighten out the problem on Main Street the whole street needs to be changed to bring in the "desirable" patrons. Need I point out that the Tattoo Parlor and the Deli (Bogeda) on Main street have had problems just as bad as Oxygen Bar. Wake up Rocky Point. It's not just Oxygen bar that is the problem. It's all of Main Street.

As a point of fact, with the help of severe opposition from the community, the Tattoo Parlor and Bodega are long gone?

Albeit a work in progress I think the new CVS,Caruso's, Bagels n a Hole Lot More and Tommys are certainly welcome additions.

Oxygen and the junk store/appliance guy are really the last of the real trash there. Once the building is leveled we can start anew.

It's not the bus drivers or civil servents and such in this club at 4 in the morning but rather the gun toting knife weilding have too much to prove degenerates that society will be paying for now and when they are old. Close the club, I said earlier but my post disapeared I leave for work at 4am and have seen fights a bottle being thrown at a car and also see the police babysitting the place (while there resources could be better used protecting our homes at night wich by the way this club doesn't help.

Local Mom, I was responding to your comment about the needs of youth.

And I agree to fix the problem, we need to find the cause. Someone agreed to let that place open and it wasn't the people that frequent it. That's alot of the problem. And I agree, Howard, it's not just Oxygen. Just because a business is willing to pay rent does not mean they are a good fit for our store fronts.

Thanks for the acknowledgement Jenn. The really sad part is that there are still decent businesses around main street that are struggling to make it. They deserve a better "downtown" community support. Guess it's two years ago now when during a great summer "Big Shot" concert with a huge crowd in the church parking lot that the Hells Angels road into town did "their business" on main street and left. Wouldn't it have been nice if that huge crowd were have been able to walk main street that night and boosted the local economy with nice shops there? I don't know the answer to the problem but I do know that main street needs a make over or the nonsense that occurred at Oxygen bar and on main street will not go away.

My question than is Rocky Point going to be a "pro-active" community" toward the revitalization of Main Street or a (as is now and has been for the last few years) a "reactive community" who is blind to the problems right under you nose and claims victory after a set of criminal events?

Howard, what do you mean by did their business? Was there trouble? I remember those summer concerts going on and there as quite a lot of excitement(positive) about it. That's the kind of thing we need. There are a lot of unrecognized good businesses in RP. Sadly, it's not those businesses that are making the front of Newsday.

I don't know the answer either. But, I don't consider the shut down a victory as much as I see it as a necessity. I think it's a very smart move, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it's a step in the direction towards progress.

We need to step backward to see where we went wrong, in order to step forward.

The trouble went barely reported but during the height of the concert the Hells Angels road into and out of town after nearly beating to death someone at the Tattoo Parlor on main street. If I remember correctly the man was airlifted to Stony Brook at J Edgar school. This all went barely noticed and mentioned in the press. My point is there should be no real surprise about the Oxygen bar. The main street Rocky Point community has had "deliberate" blinders on for years.
And I agree we need to step forward and not wait for the next incident to react to.

Before this community applauds our representatives for their 'action' with regard to the closure of Oxygen, please note that Oxygen was NOT the first club opened by the very same management. When Ms. Bonner was campaigning for election, I specifically asked her if my vote will ensure that the club (possibly when it was the Edge) be closed and the property be used to benefit the community. Ms Bonner had very positive things to say about the manager, Bobby Gerson, and his 'strong' desire to 'clean the place up' ..... that 'clean up' resulted in the OXYGEN CLUB. As long as the current manager and owner retain the property and the State Liquor Board does not act to recind the license (originally given for a previous club on the same site, i.e. Sundance) there is no way to block the opening of yet another club by the same team who have run Sundance, Edge and Oxygen (yes, all run by under the SAME original license(!). As regards Sen. LaValle's action in contacting the State Liquor Board requesting update on the original complaint filed 11/10, why did it take the shooting of 4 patrons to trigger Sen. LaValle's 'interest' in the plight of his constituents. We have been complaining for YEARS! I placed a call to the Police the Thursday night just prior to the shooting incident, complaining of crowds milling and the potential risk of accident with patrons running into 25A. There should be no applause until the building is torn down (and the ground salted!)

Reading the previous comments was really an eye opener for me. We are fairly new to the area (purchased our home in June 2010). The small town feel is what attracted us to the neighborhood, but I have to say that I don't like what I've been seeing lately. Hope they don't let this guy re-open under a different name. Why does Rocky Point need a night club in their midst anyway? I'm hoping to see a nice "Mom & Pop" store or something for the kids in it's place!

I've been here for almost five years. I don't regret buying here, but I do feel RP needs attention, before things take a turn for the worst. I also didn't realize the "rep" RP was getting until after I moved here. But, I also must say, I didn't realize how much I could love a town either or defend it. Rocky Point is home.

The town has the power to be amazing. There is so much charm here. The beaches, the trails and the history are to be proud of, but a shooting like the the one at Oxygen, negates it all for many.

In saying that I happen to love it here as I have mentioned earlier. I am just concerned by the previous comments I have read not only pertaining to this bar but in total... I admit my comment was a bit heated but I just came off a 16 hour shift. I am glad to see the place is gone and feel bad for the people who live in the town that has the club that the degenerates will now frequent instead of Oxygen. Funny Kim that right under Cypress Hills J train station I was mugged by what the Police say was 18 to 25 black Males. I was 16 and couldn't have been more than a hundred pounds. They beat me until I was unconcious and if not for a passing patrol car I guess they would have kicked me until I was dead (you know the tough guys that are real tough at 20 to 1) so sorry if I am jaded but Passing that club ona a weekend at 4am just reminded me of East New york in the summertime where I used to carry a fake gun and had to pull it out on countless occasions to scare off opportunistic scumbags who would try to rob me just for walking homefrom my girlfriends house (who lived in cypress hills). Oh yea and Kim I went to Lane HS too, do you know that because of the Latin Kings (street gang) Lane had to close down and is now a Trade scool . Scary but if it happened there could it happen here? Evidently not seeing that they took a stand an closed down that life threatening getto cancer called O2. Lastly my comments are not racial as I look up to ANYONE that cares for his or her family, works hard and avoids assinine bullshit, but I also have no problem saying what I see either!

@ Artie...OK, I understand your passionate comments...small world, I too was robbed @ Cypress Hills train station & it was MY stop everyday!!! lol...yeah, I know that Lane was shut down, but it was a long time coming. That whole neighborhood is straight ghetto (wasn't really like that as a kid...only got bad when I was in my teens)...I'm worried because I waited so long to buy a house in a good neighborhood & I'm just afraid that it will become another "ghetto" if these places are allowed to operate. Downtown RP is too small for a nightclub that will attract idiots who don't know how to act or who have to put a bullet in someone because they" looked at them wrong". Like I said, we're definitely all on the same side....just happy that the place is closed. Now can we get some more shops open here?

thankfully the bullet didn't pass through one of them and end up going through a window into a sleeping baby's head like happens soo often in the five borous that it is hardly even newsworthy

All of you people from RP who have such an issue with Oxygen:
Is it because of the ethnic group of people that it attracts? Because on Thursday nights it's a bunch of white teeny boppers (mind you I myself am caucasian) from your town who all go there to link up for sleazy one night stands. I my self have a child and went there with a few of my girl friends to see the artist performing that night, and I saw a 12 year old boy who was local out side the club trying to bum a cigarette off of me at 2 AM. Perhaps if you people invested your time into your town and your own children rather then on this web site you could then better your town and yours and your children's life's.

I dont think it was an ethnic group as much as it was the gunfire, drugs and neglect. I can only assume you proofed that 12 year old before giving him a smoke?.I noticed you didnt care to share from where you came from to cast your judgments upon our town but thanks for dropping by playing the race card.

SM, It isn't about any ethnic group, It's about safety. And how do you know the 12 year old wasn't from the town you live in? Did you proof him/her and check the address? We are on this board discussing it, because we are invested in making the change. And, I doubt you and your friends were the only people there for the artist. I'm sure most people were there for the performance, not a one night stand.

It's not about judging the people that were there or the performer. It's about making the changes to avoid this happening again.

yea it is strange that the ethnic club is the center of all this violence. It's probably white people going there dressed in make up and hip hop clothes firing guns and stabbing people and like I said I saw the one guy throw a bottle at a passing car just to give minorities a bad name. Why I bet when the people up at Tommy's are going to get violent with each other they say "wait, lets wait till 4 am and have our fight down by that Oxygen bar so as to make it look like the minorities are the problem". Please!

I live in RP, I am 21 years old, I have been to (what I still call "Club Blue") a few times for events such as shows. Lately, the recent "parties" they have been promoting have been attracting all of these lowlife characters (such as drrrrty hip hop events). I do agree they should finally knock this thing down and make a park or something.

Kids in RP need something to do, badly. I know three kids that have died from drug overdoses. Dont fool yourself, parents, RP has a drug problem. Even heroin is around, and if they're not finding that, they're slipping pills and smoking a lot of weed. Please open up SOMETHING...an arcade, a park, maybe a new bowling alley?

It's hard to believe it's almost been a year.

That Lesko, Anker and of course the Ever Vigilant "Campaign 'Bundler'" Jane Bonner had the collective "Nerve" to show up for a "photo op" at this "Train Wreck That Was Bound To Happen", when it is These Very People who are charged by Voters to keep our...ahem..."Quality Of Life", In Order, locally, is no surprise...after all it was an election cycle...Gotta Campaign, even in the face of a PR Disaster for them...It's called The Arrogance of Power !

But then we LURVE these Lurve-Able Lunk Heads don't we ?
