McCarrick's Joins "Not on Your Life Program"

Program targets keeping alcohol and tobacco out of the hands of minors.

in Rocky Point became the first local business to sign up for the “Not on Your Life” program designed to end the sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors.

Local government officials and high school principals were recently on hand at McCarrick's to help kick off the program, which is hitting the Rocky Point and Shoreham-Wading River area.

Teams of volunteers will be reaching out to vendors in the area and ask them to agree not to sell alcohol and tobacco products to minors. These teams are made up of individuals from non-profit organizations, local government leaders, law enforcement members, parents, students, faith-based organizations and local businesses.

“We must continue to increase awareness about the dangers of underage drinking and smoking not only to minors, but also the businesses that sell these products,” Councilwoman Jane Bonner said in a release. “I thank Kevin McCarrick and everyone at McCarrick’s Dairy for signing the pledge and committing to this important cause.”

Another target of the volunteers will be the location of alcohol and tobacco advertisements in relation to schools and playgrounds. Local businesses will be encouraged to display posters showing that they do not support the sale of these products to underage customers.

"I look forward to working with Not on Your Life participating members in their efforts to educate our local businesses that we will not accept the selling of liquor to underage kids,” said Legis. Sarah Anker.

The program is part of a larger effort called the Alcohol Coalition of Eastern Suffolk (ACES), which is sponsored by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Student Assistance Program.
