Rocky Point Middle School Students Become "Chemistry Detectives"

Students participate in project with the Long Island Science Center.

Long Island Science Center teacher Judy Isbitiren visited Rocky Point Middle School this semester to help students enhance their science studies by making them "Chemistry Detectives."

The Chemistry Detectives program is a hands-on way to learn how to find the identity of an unknown substances and common household items such as baking powder, laundry soap, cornstarch. The students used deductive reasoning and analytical thinking to find the identity of the mystery powder and developed concrete ideas regarding the formulation of atoms and molechules.

The Long Island Science Center, located in Riverhead, is a non-profit organization. They bring their hands-on, fun and educational programs to schools and libraries across Long Island in order to encourage enthusiasm and excitement in learning and discovery for children. The center houses a museum and has programs and classes along with a science store.
