At the start of 2011, both Curves and Ladies Workout Express were open for business.

Early in the year, the Miller Place Curves closed down and became the latest casualty of nation-wide closings from Curves International.

Over the summer, Ladies Workout Express, located in the Stop & Shop Center, quickly shut its doors. A sign on the door reads "this club is closed" and includes contact numbers.

With both women's workout spots closing, it begs the question, were there too many workout options in the area? With numerous clubs, the booming Zumba craze that is now offered at almost all fitness clubs in the area, plus popular cardio kickboxing classes, the interest just may not be great enough for another gym specifically designed for women.

Do you think another fitness club could thrive in either of these locations? If you were a member at either of these locations, where do you go now? What else could Miller Place use in these spots along 25A?

I think the openeing of great places like Powerhouse Fitness center caused the decrease in members at these places.

Both of these women's clubs were franchises, which is probably why they both closed. Thousands of former Curves for Women owners blame the corporate office for high franchise fees, over-saturation of territories, lack of support and inferior, non-adjustable equipment (see http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com/curves-robert-lays-story/). Anyone interested in opening an independent women's club in place of these closed franchises should read http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com/curves-can-indie-clubs-thrive-where-curves-failed/

It's the Free Market Economy, Baby.

ANYONE who opens a personal service business should do their "homework", especially in this volatile economy.

These companies would be very happy to take your money...it's up to you to use Good Sense !

On Facebook, Helen Partlow said "we are missing a really good deli.... or a new five guys or tasty crepes." Also, Holly Browne Kelly said, "Anything but another bank!"

Five Guys? Have you tried that crap? I did last week. Not impressed at all. It was glorified carnival burgers. Greasy, crushed bun wrapped in aluminum foil with fries dumped on top of it in a paper bag with a coke and it was $12.50?? WTF?? Wont be going back there for sure.
