I'm not too sure about fire "not discriminating". Go to Read Morehttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/p mc/articles/PMC2848265/ and read "Heightened Risk of Fire Deaths Among Older African Americans and Native Americans". According to that study, fire seems a bit racist to me.

Nothing but education and enlightening the minds of the people will help reduce it to is lowestRead Moreleve l possible. And that goes for all "evils". DWI/DUI is not going away. We have reached what many professionals believe to be an absolute possible bottom we can under enforcement without turning America into a overbearing Nazi type state. The stats will rise and fall closely around the levels they are at now. Make sure you know the real stats and not what you hear on the news or some group that relies on donations or taxes. The stupidity (and I don't mean just stupid people) that DWI / DUI is will be around for a very long time - perhaps even dare I say forever. You need to understand there are and will be always, people who just don't get it - that that behavior is rather high risk and shows complete lack of responsibly for your fellow man. Even relatively good and intelligent people can fall victim to this. One enforcement issue I do take issue with is being able to plead down driving infractions (even DWI/DUI). If you are speeding and should be given 4 points and a $500 fine that should not be turned into 0 points and a $250 parking ticket. If anyone ever recorded the on-goings in Traffic Court in Suffolk and Nassau most people would be incensed. It's a nice place to work because everyone is happy. County getting rich and people getting off light (for the most part). I don't believe a guy who cuts across lanes of traffic dangerously on the LIE should plead down to Jay Walking Summons of $180. Anyway back to you... You live in a world of risk and reward. The problem you are suffering over is not DWI. You must dig deep into your heart and come to terms that. Seek to reduce danger to reasonable levels, but not to the point of crossing over a line that impinges on freedom. We are doing fine in the area of DWI and just need to remain diligent. The kids today who have normal functioning minds for the most part get the message. Go seek out the actual stats for DWI in your area. Even MADD has shifted some of their focus to "underage drinking" and not just DWI at this point as they try to stay relevant. My hat is off to them and the great awareness and lobby job they did on DWI. I will now keep an eye on them as they morph into whatever they are becoming next as they now - as a group - become more about survival of their group then what their group actually was originally about.

Hi Frank, Patch recently went through a restructuring and our staff is much thinner now. In fact,Read MoreI am the only editor for 14 sites. So by necessity our coverage has become much more regional in nature. We are still making an effort to publish local content, but there's no way we can do it as intensely as we have in the past. I have been encouraging readers to use our Boards and blogging platform to share their own news and thoughts on major issues in town. I always do my best to feature reader contributions in the top spot on the homepage. Feel free to reach out to me anytime at ryan@patch.com. Thanks.

Thanks for reply. Hang in there man. You are in a tuff spot. Knowing the nature of the beast youRead Morehav e immediate issues. 1. Help will not be coming soon - no matter what they tell you and 2 you will barely get a pat on the back for holding things together in the meantime. Hopefully I'll be wrong on both counts. But now that your statement is public here - which is a great thing you did- I ask all readers making issue about the hyper local angle taking a back seat at this patch and neighboring ones to hang in there and support Ryan. Lets hope the grand experiment at hyper local news can survive. I think it is rather important and can be an incubator for society. The gathering of local minds can snowball into some good things - bad too of cause but mostly good because most people are good.

Shooting the racoons seems like a horible way to deal with the situation. I don't know what the law Read Moreis on this point. The last time I saw an incident with a raccoon I called animal control and I was told that since it Read Moreis not a protected species therefore no laws are broken if someone kills them. That was at least 10 years ago so you may want to double check on this. It is disgusting for anyone to have such a low regard for life in any form. All one can hope for is people like that come back as a raccoon and someone does to them what they did to those poor raccoons.
Janet March 08, 2014 at 10:21 AM
Thomas, I will never give up! That having been said I am a realist and I know that there are people Read Morein other parts of the country that want things to change back but since I truly believe that it is not that the conservatives don't get out and vote I believe there are not enough of us left to win, and definitely not in NY state. I have a friend who's daughter would not vote for Romney because he didn't believe in abortion. I guess in her mind that was the most important issue. But she is 26 and the country is falling apart around us and she believes abortion is the most important issue even though her parents explained to her that the president can't change that and the chances of that being changed by the supreme court are slim to none. So you see that's just a little bit of how these "kids" think. My own cousin voted for Obama because she felt that Romney being rich couldn't "relate" to the average person. And my cousin is in her 50's. I truly believe we are in the minority and all I want at this point is to leave NY for a red state and spend my twilight years as they call it in peace.
Tomas March 09, 2014 at 01:10 PM
