Anglers and Bait Shop Owners Have Mixed Feelings Over New Fishing Regs

Looser restrictions mean more and bigger fish for anglers.

Ask the average fisherman and he’ll tell you that the less restriction on fishing the better. More fish, bigger fish and a longer season means more fun out on the water. Just this month, the New York State Department of Conservation loosened restrictions on fluke, porgy and black sea bass, meaning that the agency thinks the populations of those species are healthy and plentiful. “These regulation changes reflect improvements to populations of scup [porgy], black sea bass and summer flounder [fluke],” said Kathy Moser, DEC Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources, in a statement announcing the expansion. Moser pointed to porgy – a popular game fish among kids and adults – as being particularly robust. Fishermen and bait and tackle shop …

New restaurant takes over former Taco Bell location in the Kohl's Shopping Center.

In January, Patch announced that Moe's Southwest Grill is coming to Rocky Point to replace the old Taco Bell in the Kohl's Shopping Center. "@MPRPPatch We're working towards opening early summer, if everything goes according to schedule," they wrote. Many in the community considered the Taco Bell building, closed for quite some time, an eyesore and have expressed their excitement over Moe's coming to Rocky Point via social media. When we first shared the news on our Facebook page, comments came flooding in. Adalwolfa Colette Stoddard wrote, "Moes is the best thing in the world. happy" Shelley Forys …

Farmers Market Coming to Downtown Rocky Point

New market features local vendors and looks to help promote Rocky Point.

It's been a thought for years, but a Rocky Point Farmers Market is now a reality and it begins Sunday. Rocky Point Civic Association President Charles Bevington helped create a committee, which Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined, that got the wheels in motion. "I think the Civic has been trying for a couple of years, and we just got to the point where we said ‘hey, let’s do it,’" Bevington said. "We started the committee, and it’s been working." The market will run every Sunday from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m at the intersection of Prince and Broadway. Right now, it features two farmers and one artisan, but Bevington said they hope to have 15 people (eight farmers, seven artisans) in the next couple of weeks. "One lady will be making homemade soap, two …

Bought some wooden roses for my wife and mother in-law for mothers day. There were also organic vegetables available but the quantity/variety was limited. Still a great first attempt. One on my high school classmates used to run the Wading River May's Farm stand at Port Jeff. He has unfortunately passed, but you brought back a great memory of him. Do You Support Small Biz? Abandoning Local Shop Says 'No'

Toy Shoppe of Setauket points the finger at lack of community backing for mom and pops for its decision to head south.

Michael and Shari Zuckerman, owners of The Toy Shoppe in Setauket, aren't leaving town quietly. The couple on Wednesday posted a letter on Three Village Patch announcing that they were closing up shop and moving the business to North Carolina, where they claim the market for mom and pop retail is alive and well, something that can't be said about Long Island, according to them. "This town, like many other Long Island towns, does not support its local stores. Many people in the town refused to step foot in the store for reasons we can’t put a finger on. The sentiment we got was that because we were small, we had to be overpriced. While true we were small, we held our line on price and service the big boys would have been jealous of," they …

Will You Use Off-Track Betting's ‘Qwik Bets’ Machine at Carmody's?

Will you wage your bets in Rocky Point?

Last March, OTB filed for bankruptcy and closed several full-service betting parlors across the county, including one in Riverhead. A year later, the company has opened 19 Qwik Bet locations at neighborhood bars, including the newly named Carmody's (formerly Tommy's Place) Rocky Point, as part of their reorganization to become profitable, according to OTB spokesperson Debbie Pfeiffer. “We’ve made a big push with the Qwik Bet, since we did have to close a number of branches last year, so folks can still wager especially on the big race days,” she said. “Our employees will be available on those big days to help first-time betters — we don’t want people to be intimidated by these machines.” All the bartender has to do it give the customer a …
