LOCAL FILMMAKER TRACY KING-SANCHEZ APPOINTED TO STONY BROOK ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD

STONY BROOK, NY, June 13, 2014 – Stony Brook University’s Alumni Association has appointed Miller Place’s Tracy M. King-Sanchez, a talented writer who operates her own film production company, to its Board of Directors, the University’s alumni relations office announced.

“Tracy proudly represents the growth and strength of our Alumni Association as we continue to strengthen and deepen our Stony Brook footprint across the country and around the globe,” said Carol Gomes, `90, `97, President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association.

King-Sanchez, 44, has earned three degrees from Stony Brook. Most recently, she was awarded an MFA in creative writing in 2012. Earlier, she received a master’s in teaching English in 1994 and a bachelor’s in English in 1992.

“It was at Stony Brook where I gained the tools and confidence to pursue my goals and life-long dreams,” said King-Sanchez, who won the grand prize at the 2012 Women in Film & Video/New England. “It has been amazing to witness the ongoing success of the University as a whole, as well as the faculty, staff and students who make Stony Brook a valuable institution of learning.”

King-Sanchez of Miller Place, New York, began her production company, It Is What It Is Productions, Inc., in 2008. Her short film, Artistic Closure, was featured at the 2008 Stony Brook Film Festival. She is a former high school English teach and college advisor.

The other new Alumni Association board members are …

Shashi B. Agarwal ’79, principal research engineer at Seagate Technology in Cupertino, California.

Patrick Cunningham ’93, senior vice president of sales for Lucera Financial Infrastructure in Manhattan.

Kent Gustavson ’04, ’07, an acclaimed author whose definitive biography of music icon Doc Watson, Blind But Now I See, earned Gustavson the Next Generation Indie Book Award in 2011. 

Joseph S. Manopella ’95 is a healthcare executive for the North Shore-LIJ Health System. He earned a bachelor’s in sociology from Stony Brook’s College of Arts and Science. Manopella of Williston Park has over 16 years of experience in healthcare management. 

The Alumni Association engages alumni in the life of Stony Brook University and its students, encouraging alumni to maintain lifelong connections with Stony Brook and to support the university's goals. Its board of directors plays a key role in planning and organizing alumni programs and services, while establishing and maintaining the association’s fiscal policies and procedures.
