Deb Austin is a local woman dealing with a rare form of cancer, the same type that took the lives of Steve Jobs and Dave Thomas, whose friends and family have come together to put together an event at Carmody's in Rocky Point to help support her and her family in their fight.
The event, held Saturday from 3-6 p.m., is $35 at the door and includes wine, beer, soda and buffet. Kids are welcome too, ages 5-10 for only $10. There will be a Chinese Auction, a 50/50 raffle and a door prize.
"I grew up here on Long Island," Austin said, "but like so many had to move away because we couldn't afford the cost of living. When I took on this illness it was very hard to deal with without the support of family and friends so we had to move back to Long Island. Between the medical expenses and the cost of living, we have been struggling. I am so grateful for my friends putting this together for me."
Music will be provided by Nelson and the Rockafellas and Frank Mirando from Master Chef will also be in attendance. Some of the many prizes available in the auction are a six-month membership to Powerhouse Gym, four tickets to Top of the Rock (Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center) with four tickets to the Museum of Modern Art (a $200 value), lunch for two at Caruso's in Rocky Point and much more.
