Grab and Go Kids Planner: Greet March With The Arts

Two great high school shows, puppets and a reading dog at the libraries highlight the week's events.

It's the first weekend in March, but even while the kids are eager to play outside there is still a lot of great indoor fun around: see a great play, read to a dog and more.

1. Rocky Point HS Musical: THE Phantom of the Opera

Where/When: Rocky Point High School. 82 Rocky Point, Yaphank Road, Rocky Point, NY 11778,  Thursday March 3, / Friday March 4, / Saturday March 5, at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go:  The Phantom of the Opera, one of Broadway's longest running plays, has an incredible score, which will be running through your head for days afterward. This is the first year schools have been permited to gain the rights to produce Phantom.

2. READ TO MUDGE AT NSPL

Where/When: North Shore Public Library, 250 Route 25A, Shoreham, N.Y. 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. 

Why Go: Therapy dog Mudge provides an effective and non judgmental audience for children who might have difficulty reading aloud. Reading to Mudge allows such children to not worry about how they sound--and, as a result, their reading aloud skills improve.

3. FAMILY FUN AT THE CHILDREN'S MARITIME MUSEUM

When/Where:  Port Jefferson Village Center, 101a E Broadway, Port Jefferson. Weekly on Saturdays and Sundays. Saturdays – 3-5 p.m. Sundays – 1-5 p.m.

Why Go: Engineer a waterwheel, design a dock, bail a boat, navigate a virtual harbor and more. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

4 MR. MOUSE'S PUPPET SHOW AT COMSEWOGUE

Where/When: Comsewogue Public Library, 170 Terryville Road, Port Jefferson Station, Sunday, March 6,  1:30 p.m.–2:15 p.m.

Why Go: A show with 25 puppets, including the dancing potato head, the six foot worm and dancing clovers.

5. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF AT MILLER PLACE HS

Where/When: Miller Place High School, 15 Memorial Drive, Miller Place, NY 11764, Sunday, March 6, 2001, Tuesday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: To see one of the classic American musicials. March 4 and March 5 shows sold out, so get your tickets now.
