Lance Corporal Nelson Acevedo Returns Home
Lance Cpl. Nelson Acevedo got a hero's welcome upon his return to Miller Place Saturday afternoon.
U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Nelson Acevedo was welcomed home from a stint in Afghanistan on Saturday afternoon by members of the local fire departments.
Lance Cpl. Acevedo, a 21-year-old Miller Place resident, was a member of the 2/9 2nd Marine Division and received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation with Combat Medal for saving the life of a fellow Marine in his division.
Two engines lined each side of Broadway in Rocky Point just south of 25A with their ladders raised and a large American flag draped across the middle.

Lance Cpl. Nelson was accomponied by the "Patriot Guard Riders of New York," a group that arranged the celebrations of returning soldiers. The trip culminated with the ride down Broadway after a stop in Maryland to visit the family of a Marine from Lance Cpl. Nelson's unit who lost his life in combat.
