UPDATED: More Snow to Hit the Local Area Wednesday

The National Weather Service said Miller Place-Rocky Point could see up to 18 inches of accumulation.

The National Weather Service in New York early Wednesday morning issued a special weather statement pinpointing local areas, including parts of the Miller Place-Rocky Point area, expected to get the worst of the winter storm.

A band of heavy snow is moving from Sound Beach to Westhampton, according to the weather service, which didn't increase any accumulation forecasts for the area. Miller Place, Sound Beach and Rocky Point are expected to get up to 18 inches of snow by the end of the day Wednesday.

The weather service advised motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel Wednesday.

In nearby Three Village, the worst of the storm stretches from Old Field to East Patchogue and the weather service said the area could get 2-4 inches of snow per hour Wednesday. That band of snow is moving slowly east.

The weather service has issued a winter storm warning for the most of the Island for Tuesday night through Wednesday. The forecast said the worst of the storm will hit after midnight and early Wednesday morning, with visiblity less than 1/4 mile at times.

The Town of Brookhaven Highway Department said it's has been preparing all day for the storm.  "We've restocked all our yards with materials, sand and salt," said Lori Baldassare, Deputy Superintendent of Highways. She added the town has hired outside plows to help move the snow.

In Miller Place, the fire department is already preparing for the coming snowfall. Chief of Department, Carl Schroeter said firefighters were hard at work Monday assuring all apparatus and tools were fueled and in working condition.

Schroeter added the department already has volunteer crews ready to sleep at the firehouse from 11 p.m. Tuesday night to 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.

"The Miller Place Fire Department is ready for this storm," he said.
