New 9/11 Memorial Statue Will Honor Rescue Dogs

Bronze statue of a German Shepard will be added to Diamond in the Pines 9/11 Memorial.

The Rocky Point VFW will soon have a new addition.

The and the Town of Brookhaven plan to add a bronze statue of a German Shepard to the memorial in order to honor the animals that played a vital part in the rescue and recovery effort following the attacks.

The statue is also designed to recognize the dogs that provide assistance and companionship to soldiers overseas as well as veterans at home.

“I, along with Joe Cognitore and the Diamond in the Pines Learning Site committee, look forward to dedicating this new statue during a special eleventh anniversary ceremony later this year," Rich Acritelli from the Rocky Point VFW said in a release. "The community and local businesses really stepped up to help us build the memorial and I’m sure that we’ll have the same support for the new statue.”

The statue will be funded by private donations and is expected to be ready by August. It will be unveiled at the eleventh anniversary ceremony.  The Rocky Point Veterans of Foreign Wars  is seeking donations to help with the cost of the addition to the memorial.
