Permit Granted to Build Playground at Veteran's Park

Councilwoman Bonner secures permit from DEC.

After months of contact with the Department of Environmental Conservation, and through working with the Brookhaven Business Community Alliance, Councilwoman Jane Bonner announced that temporary permit has been granted to locate a playground at Veteran’s Park in Rocky Point.

Starting around six to eight months ago, according to Bonner, Joe Kessel Jr. (President of the BBCA) qualified and had been granted a downtown revitalization park for a new playground at Veteran's Way park behind Tildas. One of the sticking points for the county to sign off on using the revitalization money for a playground was to figure out what would happen to the playground equipment in the unlikely event the DEC decided to take back the property. Bonner worked with their office to come to an agreement that if they do back the property, the equipment can still be used in the council district.

"We previously had playground but it had come to disrepair," Bonner said. "We always talked that if we could get a playground down there it would help with revitalization. We got word [Friday] morning, so it's really very exciting. This is something the downtown community has been very desirous of. This is just another piece of the puzzle for the revitalization of downtown Rocky Point."
