On Sept. 11, 2001, Jim Hay, was a Lieutenant with Ladder 117 in Astoria, one of the first fire companies to arrive at Ground Zero after the second tower fell.
“Once we got to Shea Stadium they shipped us down via MTA buses ... and we operated probably a little bit more than a day and a half before we went back and took a break," he said.
Hay said he and his fellow firemen were searching for the command post, but could only find the fire trucks under the rubble and concrete.
"We were right under where the second tower fell," he said. "Building No. 7 fell just over our shoulders, which happened around four in the afternoon.”
Hay, who became a captain with Ladder 163 in Woodside since, moved to Miller Place in 1998 and joined the Miller Place Fire Department as a volunteer around 2004.
