PHOTOS: Rescue Dog Statue Added to Rocky Point VFW 9/11 Memorial

Statue honors rescue dogs and animals that were vital in helping in the rescue and recovery after the 9/11 attacks.

The Rocky Point VFW now has a new addition as the Rocky Point and the Town of Brookhaven dedicated a bronze statue of a German Shepard to the memorial Satruday.

The statue, funded with over $20,000 in private donations to the Rocky Point VFW, honors animals that played a vital part in the rescue and recovery effort following the attacks 11 years ago.

“The memorial at Diamond in the Pines Park is a reminder that the American spirit of bravery and determination is not only present in people, but also in the dogs that continue to serve as part of our Armed Forces," Councilwoman Jane Bonner said in a release.

"I commend Rich Acritelli, Joe Cognitore, and the members of the Rocky Point VFW for honoring the extraordinary animals that search tirelessly through the wreckage of the fallen towers, as well as those that serve our community through the Suffolk County Police Department on a daily basis.”
