With Temperatures Soaring, Locals Flock To Cedar Beach

As record temperatures approach this week, many in the area are weighing their options to stay cool, and plenty have flocked to Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai. 

The beach was lined with umbrellas Tuesday afternoon as locals found some shade, hit the water or just grabbed a drink to cool down. 

Services Set for Miller Place Woman Killed in Crash

Linzie Leigh Davis will be remembered at services set for Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday morning.

Visitation will be at The Branch Funeral Home in Miller Place on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Her funeral Mass will be Thursday morning at St. Louis de Montfort in Sound Beach at 10 a.m. with a private cremation to follow.

Woman Succumbs to Injuries After Hit-and-Run Accident in Mt. Sinai

The 56-year-old woman who was critically injured in a June 23 hit-and-run accident in Mt. Sinai has died, Suffolk police said Thursday.

Karen Benjamin of Coram was out for a jog when she was struck at approximately 11 a.m. on Canal Road just west of Route 83 in Mt. Sinai.

She sustained serious injuries to her head, arms and legs and underwent brain surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital two days after the accident. She was pronounced dead on July 17.

Fire Departments Contain Rocky Point Brush Fire

A brush fire ignited in the woods off Whiskey Road in Rocky Point Wednesday but was contained by the Rocky Point and Ridge Fire Departments.

The fire was reported to police at 5:27 p.m and was extinguished before it could spread. It was contained east of the intersection of Whiskey and Rocky Point Road.

Miller Place Board of Education Finds Savings in New Contracts

Miller Place Board of Education is hoping a series of new contracts will hep the school district's bottom line. 

Michael Unger, presidents of Miller Place Central School District's Board of Education, announced Wednesday the board has reached new salary and benefit agreements with its school nurses, administrators and non-union central office staff.  The contracts will cover the district over the upcoming 4 - 5 years.
