Whiz Kid: Marlaina Sherman A Multi-Sport Star

Sherman leads Miller Place varsity girls basketball and soccer teams to playoffs.

Name: Marlaina Sherman - Age 17

School: Senior at Miller Place High School

Accomplishments: Sherman was the starting center for the Miller Place varsity girls basketball team and starting goal keeper for the varsity girls soccer teram her senior year. This summer she earned a bronze medal with the Long Island Empire girls basketball team at the 2010 Empire State Games and led Miller Place to the small school championship in the Town of Brookhaven Summer League. In the fall soccer season she recorded seven shutouts during the regular season and started every game in net for the Panthers; leading them to a 10-3 record in League VI and the No.5 seed in the Class A playoffs. In the winter basketball season, Sherman recorded an impressive nine double-doubles (at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in the same game).  With the help of fellow seniors Brea Greene and Deanna Molinelli, the Panthers earned No.5 seed in the Class A playoffs with a 6-6 record in League V.

Keys to Awesomeness: Despite of the playoffs, Sherman had a very impressive senior season. Aside from the nine double-doubles, Sherman was sixth on Long Island in scoring this year, averaging 19.2 points per game and 16th on Long Island and ninth in Suffolk County in rebounding (7.1 per game). With basketball season over, Sherman will now gear up for softball in the spring.
