Coffee House Comedy at the Beanberry Caffe

Miller Place coffee shop proves to be the hot spot for good laughs with good friends.

So, a guy walks into a coffee shop… stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

This past Friday the Beanberry Caffé of Miller Place presented a night of food, drink and punch lines at its “Comedy Night.” The venue was packed with people from all over Suffolk County eager to get some laughs courtesy of great local comedians.

Debra, a Center Moriches resident, felt the evening of laughs at the Beanberry was well worth the trip for her and her friends.

“We made the 15-20 minute drive to have a good time," she said. "We came out last month and thought it was awesome.”

The Beanberry hosts its night of comedy once a month. The work done by the comedians this past Friday proved that last month’s success was no fluke. Dora, of Port Jefferson, like much of the crowd, enjoyed each of the six comedians who performed.

“I thought they were all very entertaining and brought their own individuality to their segments.”

Individuality is a key ingredient to any comedian’s success. Performer, Les Degen of Seaford notes that some of the biggest influences on his brand of comedy are his song parodies and simply telling his audience “the way [he] sees it.”

Performer Alan Gootnick of Jericho felt as though the Beanberry was an ideal place to perform.

“I love it here,” he said. “It’s a great place. It’s a real intimate setting where you can really connect with your audience.”

“It’s like being in a living room,” Degen added.

The Beanberry Caffé provided excellent entertainment, but their vast selection of wraps, baked goods, smoothies, beers, and wines are enough to make you want to come back at any time for a bite to eat or refreshing drink in a relaxed atmosphere.

It makes a strong effort to reach out to the community by hosting a wide variety of events that encourage participation and attendance from community members. In addition to monthly comedy nights, the Beanberry also hosts a weekly open mic on Wednesday nights, various performers on the weekends and potentially, a weekly “Trivia Night” that will take place on Thursdays.

It proves to be a valuable resource for local aspiring musicians and comedians looking to have their material heard. A resource that residents value immensely.

“It is vital for a community to have outlets for culture and entertainment," said one Miller Place resident.

This sentiment is clearly shared by Beanberry and as a result, the community gets the chance to see just how much talent there is right in their own backyard.

The next Comedy Night at the Beanberry will take place on Aug. 8, at 8 p.m.
