Bites Nearby: Steaks and More at J&R's Steak House

Local outlet of mini-chain is both family and wallet friendly.

Overview: Burgers, steaks and chops dominate the menu at J&R's Steak House -- with big portions -- all at prices well south of your typical steak house. Plus, kids eat free Sunday through Thursday.

Decor: Comfortable -- if sometimes loud in a friendly saloon sort of way -- the bar and two dining rooms offer ample room and noise level make J&R's impeccably family friendly.

The Drinks: Full bar, including a strong tap beer program that always features at least a couple Hofbrau beers (usually Hefe-Weizen and Original) as well as some other better-than-expected selections.

Appetizers: All of the bar and steakhouse favorites are available, including Chicken Wings ($6.99), Potato Skins ($6.99), Jalapeno Cheese Poppers ($6.99), Chili Cheese Fries ($4.99) and J&R's Onion Straws with Horseradish Sauce ($3.99). You'll also find Coconut Shrimp, Shrimp Scampi, Fried Calamari, Maryland Crab Cakes and steamed Mussels -- all $6.99 each.

Garden salads are generously portioned and are available with or without fresh blue cheese or feta ($2.39 for small, $3.39 for large) . The Greek Salad ($7.99)  is similarly sized and any of the salads can be ordered with grilled shrimp, chicken or steak tidbits ($10.99)

Entrees: An array of burgers and chicken sandwiches ($4.99 - 7.99) are all served with lettuce, tomato, cole slaw, onion straws and a pile of steak fries. Worthy of special mention is the Filet Mignon Tidbits Deluxe ($8.99) which is served on garlic bread with mushrooms, onions and melted mozzarella or cheddar.

As one would expect, steaks dominate the menu and are available plain or marinated, are cooked to your liking and served with soup or salad, vegetable of the day and one side. 

All of the usual cuts are available, from the 12 oz J&R Steak (ribeye) for $14.99 to the 24 oz. T-Bone ($17.99) to the 12 oz. filet mignon ($18.99) all are good values.  For lovers of big steaks with even bigger flavor, the 22 oz. Romanian Skirt Steak is a must. 

Prime Rib is also a speciality and comes in three sizes: 8 oz. ($12.99), 12 oz. ($14.99) and 18 oz. ($18.99).

If steak isn't your thing,  J&R's offers ribs ($13.99 for one rack, $18.99 for tw0), lamb chops with mint jelly ($18.99), Pork Chops ($13.99) and a handful of grilled chicken entrees ($11.99-12.99). Various seafood entrees range in price from $13.99 to $20.99 for Two Lobster Tails.

Sides: Plentiful and affordable ($2.29 each) there are vegetable sides like Fresh Broccoli (with garlic sauce, cheddar cheese sauce, or plain), Creamed Spinach, BBQ Beans and Steamed Mixed Veggies and potato-pasta sides like Baked Potato (with sour cream and butter), Baked Sweet Potato, Rice, Home Frise, Steak Fries and Mashed Potatoes (plain, garlic or with gravy).

Desserts: Various house-made Homestyle Creamy Cheesecakes ($3.99)

Service: There can be a wait on weekends, but the servers are friendly and do a good job handling the crowds.

Signature Dish: 76 oz. Steak Challenge. If you can eat the entire behemoth steak in one hour, it's free. If not, it's $59.99. Finish in time and you'll be immortalized on the wall of fame and get a t-shirt.
