Bites Nearby: Sweets of the Spoon

New Rocky Point ice cream shop is that -- and so much more.

Overview: New on the Rocky Point scene, offers morning coffee and pastries, lunch, dinner and of course dessert.

Breakfast: Though they don't open until 11 a.m., you'll find a variety of coffees, teas and hot chocolate as well as house-made Muffins ($1.45) Muffin Tops ($0.95) and Bagels ($0.95 plain, $1.45 buttered and $1.65 with cream cheese).

A variety of salads -- everything from a Fresh Spinach Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing to Grilled Portobello Mushrooms to a classic Caesar Salad -- range from $7.95 to $9.95.

Salads: You can have the basics -- House Greens ($1.45/$2.95) or House Caesar ($2.95/$4.95) or upgrade to the Milanese ($7.45), which is fresh field greens, walnuts, craisins and  gorgonzola cheese dressed with the house balsamic, or the Tortilla Bowl Salad ($5.95) made with fresh greens, tomatoes, salsa cream, guacamole, cheese and olives.

All salads are served with your choice of dressing and bagel chips.

Sandwiches: Sandwiches -- both paninis and wraps -- span a wide range of countries and cuisines. The Caprese ($7.25) is classic Italian with fresh mozzarella, tomato and pesto. As is the Bella Roma ($6.45) which features grilled chicken, red peppers and provolone cheese. 

In the mood for something different, check out the Cuban Connection panini ($7.95) which combines pulled pork, ham, and swiss cheese layered with pickles and mustard, or the Mango Tango wrap ($7.25) -- chunks of chicken with mango salsa, cilantro and fresh greens.

Desserts: Ice cream, gelato and Italian ices -- all made on-site -- range in price from $2.75 to $5.55 depending on size and delivery method (cone, waffle cone or cup).  You'll also find Brooklyn Egg Creams ($1.95/$2.45) -- not something you see every day in downtown Rocky Point.

Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
