Also this week, new businesses opened in Commack and Kings Park, while new and more established ones spoke with Patch.

Business is good so far, according to Rose Catalvas, who was working at the café on Wednesday morning.

LA Fitness Opens Its Doors in Commack

A new gym has opened for business in Commack just in time to catch residents looking to make good on their New Year's resolutions to lose weight and get in shape.

LA Fitness opened its new Commack location on Dec. 15 in the King Kullen shopping center. The gym has taken over the space left vacant when Borders closed after filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the early spring of 2011.

The new LA Fitnesss in Commack is approximately 25,000 square feet, according to manager John Bracken. It offers members the use of state-of-the-art equipment, free weights, group fitness classes including kickbox cardio and yoga. Other amenities will include a sauna and kid's klub (babysitting), according to Bracken.

Stony Brook's Own Etiquette Expert Runs The Writing Place

When it comes to the etiquette of invitations and announcements, Phyllis Martinez really knows her stuff.

For instance, writing "half past six" on an invitation for an event that starts at 6:30 p.m. is actually improper syntax. It should be "half after six," she said. And for a wedding invitation, the placement of the names depends upon who is footing the bill. And if you're not getting married in a church, she said, you're not supposed to write "The honor of your presence" on the invitation.

Her knowledge comes in handy at her store, The Writing Place, which has enjoyed a home in the Stony Brook Village Center for more than 15 years.

Does anyone know if JR's Steakhouse is going to reopen in our area if not at the same place? Our family really misses it.

Hi E - It's not likely. In a recent interview, the manager said the damage was too extensive and their lease was up at the same time. Here is the article: http://patch.com/A-zVr4 They do have a few other locations; I think the nearest ones are in Medford, Rocky Point and Patchogue (details here: http://jandrssteakhouse.com/)

The other locations are too far from Smithtown. I hope the open at another location in the area.
