Economy More Than Sandy Affecting Mt. Sinai Marina

It's the economy, sailor.

That's the impression that Jeff Corey gave when asked how it was going down at Ralph's Marina and Fishing Station in Mt. Sinai on Wednesday morning at the beginning of boating season.

"People are slow in making arrangements," said Corey, co-owner of the marina. "Usually we are way ahead."

The marina generally hauls over 400 boats every year.

Even though the stock market is up to new heights he said many people on Long Island are still feeling the pinch.

"Money is tight."

Economics are playing a bigger role than any left over effects from Sandy. Difficulties resulting from last year's super storm are mostly minimal.

"We had some problems because of the very high tide," Corey said.

The marina had some erosion in their parking lot that sits right up against Mt. Sinai Harbor and they had a couple of their boat slips fill in with sand. They also took some damage to their dock.

"We're waiting for permits to make repairs."

But the marina fared much better than others on Long Island.

"We were fortunate in comparison to the South Shore," said Corey.
