Modell's Coming to Rocky Point, Plaza Sports Moving to Miller Place

Sporting goods store coming to Kohl's Shopping Center while Plaza Sports cites economy for move.

A Modell's Sporting Goods is coming to Rocky Point in the Kohl's Shopping Center next to Michael's on Rocky Point-Yaphank Road sometime in 2013.

The Town of Brookhaven Planning Board placed on the decision calendar a modification to the facade to add a loading door to the rear of the building at its last meeting.

The sporting goods store joins Michael's, Kohl's, Petco, Moe's Southwest Grill and many others in the busy shopping center in Rocky Point.

Meanwhile, Plaza Surf and Sports has been holding a moving sale and plans to move to Miller Place next to Napper Tandy's in the former Miller Place Administration building in early April.

Plaza Sports' store manager Peter Ferraro cited not just the Modell's, but many economic reasons for the move such as decreased profit margins and major companies selling direct with websites such as Amazon as factors for their need to downsize.

"It's the economy...business isn't very good," he said. "Now you have Modell's moving in down the road so that consolidates it even more."

They hope to move from their current 14,000 square-foot store to the new 7,000 square-foot location sometime between April 1-15.

Spoken like a true teacher. Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
