Modell's Coming to Rocky Point, Plaza Sports Moving to Miller Place

Sporting goods store coming to Kohl's Shopping Center while Plaza Sports cites economy for move.

A Modell's Sporting Goods is coming to Rocky Point in the Kohl's Shopping Center next to Michael's on Rocky Point-Yaphank Road sometime in 2013.

The Town of Brookhaven Planning Board placed on the decision calendar a modification to the facade to add a loading door to the rear of the building at its last meeting.

The sporting goods store joins Michael's, Kohl's, Petco, Moe's Southwest Grill and many others in the busy shopping center in Rocky Point.

Meanwhile, Plaza Surf and Sports has been holding a moving sale and plans to move to Miller Place next to Napper Tandy's in the former Miller Place Administration building in early April.

Plaza Sports' store manager Peter Ferraro cited not just the Modell's, but many economic reasons for the move such as decreased profit margins and major companies selling direct with websites such as Amazon as factors for their need to downsize.

"It's the economy...business isn't very good," he said. "Now you have Modell's moving in down the road so that consolidates it even more."

They hope to move from their current 14,000 square-foot store to the new 7,000 square-foot location sometime between April 1-15.

Great news! I can't wait to rummage through bins of mis-matched Pumas and irregular T-shirts!

Sounds like a good move for Plaza Sports to downsize & re-organize noting sales in general for area merchants has been sluggish for quite some time. The Miller Place location is an active plaza with plenty of parking, easy access also being located close to a gym, sporting goods could go hand-in-hand.

The economy isn't the only reason people stopped shopping at Plaza Sports. Certain staff members are down right nasty and rude. I banned that store years ago.

I agree with you Laura!! I was going to post the exact same thing. The service in there is really non-existent, they make you feel like your intruding when you ask for help & they are NASTY! I also stopped going to Plaza Sports. I used to go there to try & support local business, but they acted like they didn't want it, so I guess that is what happens!

So true - I guess they couldn't find anything better to put in there??

Plaza Sports used to be next to Brian's Aquarium And Pets I believe where Family Dollar is now. In the early 90's before they moved to the bigger spot where they are now. I used to go in those 2 stores everyday!! Plaza used to be great!! The prices a little high but then again I was 10.
