New Walgreens: Welcome Addition or Pharmacy Overkill?

Walgreens is coming soon to Miller Place and will be the third major pharmacy in half-mile on Route 25A.

Walgreens was a long-rumored project for the south side of Route 25A in Miller Place for years, and it is now a fast-approaching reality that is under construction.

Currently the closest Walgreens are in Selden and Wading River. There is, however, a Rite Aid already located directly across from the site as well as two CVS'; one a half-mile down the road and the other just east in Rocky Point.

Along with the major pharmacies, there are also smaller local spots already in place such as Echo Pharmacy in Sound Beach.

Miller Place-Rocky Point Patch wants to new, is the new Walgreens a welcome addition or pharmacy overkill? Tell us in the comments section below.

Though we do NOT need another pharmacy/drug store in the area. Walgreens will be a welcome addition because it's location will make it more accessible than many of the other local pharmacy/drug stores.

It is absolutely overkill!! I am so sick of seeing pharmacies, banks, and chains going up everywhere. A nice upscale restaurant/ bar would have been great in this location. Who needs Walgreens when there's a CVS right there?- its practically the same store! I think it cheapens the area when you see these awful chains everywhere.

Trader Joes, Whole Foods!

It is absolute overkill. They tear down every parcel of underdeveloped land around here. It should have been left alone as woods. There is too much traffic and too many accidents at this corner as it is.

CVS needs the compition. CVS has been going down hill for quite awhile now. The Drug department fell off the cliff already. You never know who your dealing with. It's always new faces and lots of mistakes. The photo department has broken machines boxes and junk in all the isles. What more could we ask for?

Trader Joe's would have been a nice addition to the area. Thankfully this spot won't be another bank, 7'11 or gas station!

When will someone, ANYONE open a Pizza place or Nail Salon in the area?

Definitely a sign of poor planning--what were they thinking or were they.

Definitely overkill. I agree with the above comments about Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. I hate having to drive 20 - 30 minutes depending on traffic, to TJ's or Whole Foods every week.

Good one, K.

The Civic Association truly failed here...They should have fought the good fight to bring something new and of value to our community. Yes, a Trader Joe or health store would benefit the area. We do not need drug stores, pizza joints, or hair salons. Let's allow for the existing ones to survive without more competition!
Captain Howard Hawrey April 05, 2013 at 07:55 PM
Your are correct. All this is going to do is make vacant spots in some or our strip malls. Miller Place is about to become a mess. What a shame. Greed over respect of community! We are a mess!
Sick of MP April 05, 2013 at 11:55 PM
Miller Place IS a mess. Vacancies are high and we are sick of the lack of variety! A decent restaurant, a specialty store anything but another useless pharmacy

Before I read any of these comments, I was thinking a Trader Joes would've been nice! I too hate driving 20 min there & 20 minutes back to get Organic food. I shop @ Stop n Shops Organic Isle but they don't have all the varieties available @ TJ's. Even when the new Petco in Rocky Point was going up, I was wishing for a Trader Joes. Still hoping it'll pop up somewhere :)

Thanks Brookhaven Town Board for once again NOT taking a leadership role on the development of properties along 25A! Walgreens may very well be a well run business and a reputable establishment, but certainly NOT a necessary one here! Big chains have no place in the area that we ALL told you we wanted to have more of a small town flavor. In addition, the traffic in this area is IMPOSSIBLE and this simply adds to it! Pay attention!

is there anyone listening? to what the citizens of Miller Place would like to see of use. We do not need 5 pharmacies and 2 funeral homes....

It's sad , I remember 25a as a 2 lane rd with Davis Peach farm as a charming stop over & this was late 1990's not a hundred years ago , Brookhaven & planning & zoning had the opportunity to transform this busy corridor into a picturesque village style shopping area , Granted a nice supermarket was needed because the waldbaum was dirty & gross but outside of stop & shop plaza the development has been uninspiring generic & bland. Wholefoods , Trader Joes & if you're going to do chains how about a Cheesecake factory or Carraba's ?

What about all the small business's that are struggling in this economy. Another chain does not help us at all. Especially a drug store. Just take a pill and all will be alright. NOT!!!!
