Pick A Pickle At Pickle Packin' Papa

A pickle flying in the wind is a great sight in Rocky Point, because it means 'The Pickle Lady' is in the building.

Joy Glas has been in downtown Rocky Point for over 25 years selling her fresh homemade pickles in a variety of types and flavors.

We asked her to pick a unique pickle to talk about, and she brought out an item she says she can never make enough of, her sweet and spicy bread and butter chips.

"First you're going to taste the pickle, then it's going to give you that spice that's so delightful and it lingers on with you," she said. "You have to like sweet bread and butters to like these."

You can eat the pickles by themselves, add them to a sandwich, into a salad, or as Joy recommends, put them in meatloaf as well. Once the last pickle is gone, however, you're not quite done.

"You never throw the liquid out when you're done with the pickles," she said.

She recommends putting the liquid in tuna fish, potato salad, or anything you can imagine. Glas flies the pickle year-round in Rocky Point Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On weekends, she takes her pickles, peppers, olives and other items on the road, and is often at the Port Jefferson Farmer's Market on Sunday's. You can track the pickle lady on her Facebook page, facebook.com/picklepackinpapa.
