Town to Vote on Hallock Homestead Historic Application

The Rocky Point Historical Society is applying to designate the Hallock Homestead as a state and federal historic landmark.

Town Board members are expected to vote Tuesday night on whether or not to support an application which seeks to designate the Hallock Homestead – a home built in 1721 which was recently purchased by the Rocky Point Historical Society – as a historic landmark.

A resolution to support the application appears on an agenda for Tuesday's meeting, which begins at 5 p.m. According to a Newsday article, the application appears to have plenty of support.

The Hallock homestead – which was purchased for $200,000 earlier this year – is the oldest standing home in Rocky Point.

The house is expected to serve as a historic museum and educational center. It will also provide historic field trip programs to schools and groups.

Additionally, the Historical Society has received many artifacts from the Hallock family – which owned the house for eight generations – including archival photographs, letters, books, clothing, farm equipment and furniture that will be displayed as part of the museum.

The Rocky Point Historical Society is holding an ongoing fundraiser to make sure it is able to pay the mortgage on the home, as well as eventually create a museum at the house.
