New NY State Gun Laws: An Irresponsible Emotional Response To A Senseless Tragedy!

New NY State Gun Laws Punish Law Abiding Citizens and Take Advantage the Emotions of the Uneducated.

I do not belong to the NRA. The only gun I have in the house is a Ruger 10-22 semi-automatic rifle that I bought for my son who took an NRA safety-marksman qualifying course sponsored by the NY Civil Air Patrol this past summer. Because of my son's passion of enjoying shooting his gun we often used the Brookhaven Rifle and Gun range in Ridge this summer and fall. There we found some of the most law abiding, responsible people we have ever met. They just happen to like to shoot guns. Though the larger caliber rifles are not for me those that have them enjoy shooting them. These people are not responsible for the Newtown Tragedy.

Punishing  the law abiding citizen is a mistake. Laws made out of emotion are never thought out properly. I have learned during the passed few weeks that many people are using the terms: automatic weapon, automatic rifle, assault rifle, assault weapon, magazine, clip, high capacity magazines, etc, and few even know what they are talking about. Most did not know that NY State (along with a few other states) already had a 10 round magazine limit. NY already had some of the strictest gun laws in the country.

The US government has announced that it will be limiting magazines to 10 rounds through out the country. What does NY do? Lowers it's capacity to 7 rounds. Announcing you can keep the 10 round magazines but you can only put 7 rounds in it. HUH??? My son's 22 cal rifle which now has an adjustable stock and a pistol grip is now considered an assault weapon because of the way it looks. Not due to any change in fire power or the way the rifle is fired. HUH??? Mentally disturbed unstable individuals have caused unspeakable tragedies recently yet NY State punishes the law abiding citizen and preys on the emotions on the uneducated. Today is one of the few days I'm embarrassed to call myself a New Yorker.

"Mentally disturbed unstable individuals have caused unspeakable tragedies recently yet NY State punishes the law abiding citizen and preys on the emotions on the uneducated. " Captain, clearly you don't remember your middle school history class on "How a Bill is Passed"!

Why do you think they let Barney Fife of Mayberry RFD only had one bullet. It is the Government's responsibility to protect us. Riflemen only had 20 round mags in Viet Nam and rarely used "full rock and roll" Tell me, what upstate NY deer hunter needs a 30 round mag to bag a doe or buck..or for that matter of fact a weapon that is capable of 200 rounds per minute. Oh, I see, so some think, "cause the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution says we can.."

NY State already has a 10 round max magazine law in effect. Your deer hunter argument is invalid. Automatic rifles have been illegal since 1934. Your 200 rounds per minute argument is invalid. NY State already has some of the toughest, strictest gun laws in the Nation. These new laws are just Governor Cuomo and the NY Democrats grandstanding their politics by playing to the emotions of the uneducated. You are either uneducated on the topic or are part of the problem of spreading misinformation to people who really don't understand the gun laws of NY.

It is not the responsibility of politicians to determine our needs or wants ("NY deer hunter needs a 30 round mag"). If they did we'd all be living in apartments in public housing.

It is not the responsibility of politicians to determine our needs and wants ("what upstate NY deer hunter needs a 30 round mag"). If we let them do that, we'd be living in apartments in public housing projects and progress in general would come to a halt.

Can we create a category of weapon that is characterized as an instrument of mass death. If so, I doubt law abiding gun lovers or hunters need one. Reducing the number of weapons of mass death in society could reduce the likelihood of a madman getting hold of one. The other half of this problem is the need for people that would never consider carrying a pistol becoming licensed and trained in the use of one. Inasmuch as there is no way to predict when a madman will strike it is simply not possible to pay security guards to protect against all contingencies in all places all of the time. It is up to those peace loving persons that would never consider carrying a weapon to be prepared to protect each other from unforeseeable attacks by deranged persons. This is not call to the return of the war of all against all (a state of nature). This is the cultivation of a civic duty to protect each other from random deadly attacks by insane persons and fanatics. I doubt that persons that do not want to kill anyone will suddenly become dangerous irresponsible killers if they are equipped with an instrument (pistol) that they dread the thought of ever using. Just as we have learned to drive our automobiles (instruments of death) defensively, we could learn to protect each other defensively.

I would love to be able to say something profound but I truly don't know what to say other than guns aren't evil- it's the psychos that use them that are. Once again, the good have to suffer for the bad. Strickter gun control is not going to prevent another tragedy-getting help for the mentally deranged is the only answer to that issue.

I fail to see exactly how Gun owners are being punished. If you are a Resposibile person without mental illness you have nothing to fear. If in time the ban on assault weapons proves not useful the law will change. Right now the beginning of a new conscienseness on guns must take hold , much like the demise of cigarette smoking and drunk driving. The adoration of guns or belief that being associated with guns is a thing of pride needs to change.

Looks like Dan Losquadro is seeing some heat over his vote for the gun ban. I know there was alot of back and forth at his campaign rally on Saturday

This law does not make any distinction between civilians and police. Now it is unlawful for a cop to have more than 7 rounds in his gun. I can see the criminals smiling ear to ear. Make thorough background checks mandatory for every gun sale and do something about the gun runners who buy all the guns they want in Virginia and then bring them back to NY for illegal sale. These laws do nothing to address the real problems.

So yesterday, 4 armed criminals broke into a home in the Dix Hills area. If that homeowner chooses to defend himself with a gun with only 7 bullets, he better be a very good shot and not miss or he will run out of bullets and face the same fate that NYPD Officer Scott Gadell faced in Queens in 1986. He had a 6 shot revolver and took cover behind a cement stoop. The criminal counted his 6 shots and then rushed him and fatally shot the officer. This a "Feel Good" law that may do more harm than good.
