7 Miller Place-Rocky Point Issues to Follow in 2013

Some big stories to follow in the new year.

2012 may have ended, but that doesn't mean some issues and stories from the year won't boil over into 2013. Here are some important story-lines to follow in the new year.

Rocky Point Drive-In Property

The ongoing sage of the property in Rocky Point continues, as developers for the owner of the vacant Drive-In/Driving Range on 25A are pushing a Target for the property and have been met with both support and opposition.

Rails to Trails

A Rails to Trails project has been discussed throughout the year and the project will be given a closer look in 2013 with many different options being discussed, including a smaller trail.

Shoreham Power Plant

Long Island Power Authority officials continue to negotiate with two possible power carriers to site a new power plant in Shoreham. Plans will develop in the new year.

Brookhaven Beach Parking Fees

Newly implemented beach parking fees were met with frustration by many residents, and that will continue in the upcoming beach season as officials have announced that the fees will not only stay, but will increase.

Tesla Development

In one of the biggest feel-good local stories of the year, an online campaign raised enough money to help preserve the Tesla property in Shoreham and develop a museum in his honor.

Route 25A Safety

2012 was a bad year for accidents on Route 25A from Mt. Sinai to Shoreham, and all eyes will be safety on the road for the new year.

Tax Cap School Budget Effects

A big wrinkle in 2012 school budgets, the effects of the cap and other issues will be felt in 2013 budgets as well.

Spoken like a true teacher. Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
