An off-duty Suffolk County police officer was killed early Friday morning in a crash along Jericho Turnpike in Commack, police said.

Patrick Curley, of Huntington, was driving an SUV westbound on Route 25, near Siracusa Boulevard, when his vehicle collided with a Winters Brothers garbage truck that was backing out of a business onto Route 25 at 3:33 a.m, according to police.

Security Updates Made Priority at Smithtown Schools

Security measures for all of the Smithtown Central School District schools are being updated. Superintendent Anthony Annunziato announced during Tuesday's Board of Education meeting that security changes are possible, including hiring an outside security consultant.

Police on Wednesday responded to a potential threat at Kings Park High School, though they declined to offer specific details. The police arrived at school sometime around 10 Wednesday morning to notify officials that they were investigating a potential threat from a former Kings Park student.

In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School additional security measures have been established in Three Village schools, according to the Board of Education, which also said in a statement on Tuesday that the district won't use armed security guards in its schools.
