The North Country Road Warriors, a group for local runners from Mt. Sinai to Wading River, recently capped the month of September with nearly half of the 150 members taking part in the 11th annual Tunnel To Towers run.
The run takes place in honor of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center on 9/11 with 75 pounds of gear on his back in response to the terrorist attacks and never made it out.
NCRW members passed through and out of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and along the course and were greeted by NYC firefighters who displayed a picture of each of the 343 fellow firefighters who perished on that tragic day.
The runners also took part in a multitude of other events in the area during the month. At the Smith Point Bridge 5K Run/Walk for Literacy on Sept. 8th, 14 NCRW members participated and 11 returned with medals led by 1st place age group winners Nicolle Zeman, Kelly Mullady, Sheila Isaacs, and Kurt LaForest.
Also, the three NCRW members who competed in the Hampton Bays Over the Bridge 5K Run/Walk on Sept. 15 came away with medals led by top female winner Kelly Mullady. Rick Haviland took 1st place in his age group and Kelly Mandia placed second in hers.
