North Country Road Warriors Cap Month With Tunnel to Towers Run

Local running group takes part in 11th annual Tunnel to Towers 5K in New York City.

The North Country Road Warriors, a group for local runners from Mt. Sinai to Wading River, recently capped the month of September with nearly half of the 150 members taking part in the 11th annual Tunnel To Towers run.

The run takes place in honor of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center on 9/11 with 75 pounds of gear on his back in response to the terrorist attacks and never made it out.

NCRW members passed through and out of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and along the course and were greeted by NYC firefighters who displayed a picture of each of the 343 fellow firefighters who perished on that tragic day.

Also, the three NCRW members who competed in the Hampton Bays Over the Bridge 5K Run/Walk on Sept. 15 came away with medals led by top female winner Kelly Mullady. Rick Haviland took 1st place in his age group and Kelly Mandia placed second in hers.
