Rocky Point VFW to Construct 9/11 Memorial at Diamond in the Pines

Three monuments will be constructed at the park in Coram.

The Rocky Point Veterans of Foreign Wars Fischer-Hewins Post 6249, along with Town Supervisor Mark Lesko and Councilwoman Jane Bonner have announced plans to construct a 10th anniversary 9/11 memorial at Diamond in the Pines Park in Coram.

Three monuments will be constructed at the park; one honoring former students from Town of Brookhaven schools that perished, another for the New York City Fire Department that lost 343 firefighters, and the third for the New York City Police Department that lost 23 officers and the Port Authority that lost 37 officers.

"I would like to thank Supervisor Lesko, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and the Town Board for passing the resolution supporting the 9/11 Memorial Project, and Parks Commissioner Ed Morris for selecting the actual site in the Park," said Joe Cognitore, Commander of the Rocky Point Veterans of Foreign Wars Fischer-Hewins Post 6249.

"It is appropriate that this memorial will be in a Town of Brookhaven Park that will last for many years as a reminder to future generations. Let us never forget that 3,000 innocent people lost their lives on that horrible day."

In order to help with the cost of construction of the 9/11 memorial, the Rocky Point VFW Fischer-Hewins Post 6249 is seeking donations. More information can be found on their website.
