Second Rails to Trails Informational Meeting To Be Held

Second informational meeting will take place in Rocky Point.

Updated information on a possible Rails to Trails project on LIPA property from Port Jefferson to Wading River will be given at a second meeting on the project on Nov. 28, 7 p.m. at the Rocky Point VFW Hall.

The first meeting, held back in July, was held to give basic information and receive early feedback on the project headed by the Suffolk County Department of Public Works and consulting firm, the RBA Group. At that meeting, it was estimated the project would cost around $8-10 million, with 80 percent of the funding coming from the federal government and the rest by local government.

Since that meeting, Legis. Sarah Anker has been asking the community for feedback on the project with many in support and many opposed as well. This second meeting is designed to provide up to date information about the program and gather more input from the community as well.

Huge GOOFY WASTE of rate payer and taxpayer resources. Only a crackerjack politician could love this one.

Seems like an awesome idea. Worked everywhere in US and around the world! Hope more people (including myself) travel by bike- saving money and avoiding more traffic on our roads.

This would be amazing. We could safely walk or bike and not have to worry about all the cars on the road - especially in towns like Rocky Point. Rails to Trails would be great for our community.

Great for the community, except if you live there. Will the community give us fences so we will be protected from unwelcome visitors in our backyards?

http://www.railstotrails.org/index.html Here is a national organization dedicated to the establishment and maintenance of trails. Their model is excellent.

For Joan Sele: There will be no fences put up unless you pay for and have it put up yourself. This was straight from the man running the last meeting. I, as a property owner on the LIPA trails, urge everyone to spread the word about this meeting and do your best to attend. The VAST MAJORITY of us (that live abutting the trail) have not been notified... suspicious??? I believe so.

If 80% comes from the Federal Government on a project like that, then lets hope the Government will start cutting programs and reduce the debt. Another example of wasteful spending!

Google "bike trail crime" and see for yourself. Crime increased in every area (contrary to what the bike zealots will tell you) and homes along the trail became harder to sell.

you know what would be better? Using that money to rebuild the south shore from Sandy. Or finishing paying off heritage park. Or restoring the jobs to people who were laid off.

I bet you'd use it only a handful of times a year.

A "Trails to Rails" program should be considered to encourage the use of Mass Transit.
