State of Emergency Extended, Yard Waste Pick-Up Week Scheduled

Brookhaven extends State of Emergency until 2 p.m., possibly longer.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko extended the Town's State of Emergency until 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a meeting to be held at 1:30 p.m. discussing further extension.

The State of Emergency was originally until 1 p.m. Wednesday, but the Supervisor enacted an extension until 2 p.m. and any further extension will be discussed at the meeting.

According to state law, an emergency declaration allows town leaders to declare such measures for their respective municipalities such as a curfew, evacuation zones, emergency shelters, and opening and closing of roads to the public, among others.

All beaches have also now been opened with no restrictions as of Wednesday, according to the town. The plan is to have all Brookhaven parks opened by Friday, Lesko said.

A special yard waste pick-up week will be held next week in the Town of Brookhaven. Residential yard waste from storm damage must be bundled and placed on the curb on Sunday night for pick up next week.

In order for Brookhaven to insure FEMA reimbursement for disposal costs, residential debris must be bundled and bagged.Residents must also be aware to avoid placing debris in front of fire hydrants.
