Week in Review: Accident Injures One, Washington Trip Saved

A look back at the top headlines from the week that was in Miller Place-Rocky Point.

The Miller Place Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident with a reported car fire at the troublesome intersection of Route 25A and Miller Place Road Friday night.

First Assistant Chief Kyle Markott was first to arrive on the scene and advised incoming MPFD units that they had an SUV on fire.  MPFD Engine 1 quickly extinguished the fire and MPFD EMS sent one patient that was injured to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The Washington, D.C Trip for North Country Road Middle School 8th graders had been a tradition for years, but after last year's class missed out on the trip, parents banded together to make sure this year's 8th graders were able to experience the educational trip that so many before them did.

After , the Miller Place Board voted unanimously at the last board meeting to increase the 2012-13 budget for the Booster Club, allowing parents to pay for the trip.

If your daily travels have ever taken you to in Mt. Sinai or even if you've just driven by, at some point or another you’ve been greeted by the smiley face cut into the grass or made up of thousands of little flowers on the knoll facing Route 25A.

This year, volunteers are holding a fundraiser to bring the flowery smiley face back to the park.

According to Fred Drewes, chairman of Heritage Park's Farm Committee, back in the fall of 2004 volunteers planted 7,500 crocus that formed the first blooming smiley face. Over the the next two years the crocus came back.

Rich Abbenante is a long-time member of the Rocky Point community and an insurance agent who recently teamed up with a few partners to open up in Rocky Point.

Abbenante and his partners are looking to continue their relationship in the community by being involved in fundraisers, networking meetings and other events such as the annual . After opening up in late July, Patch sat down with Abbenante to speak about the agency.
