This weekend's blizzard was no dud, with the National Weather Service is reporting that updated measurements in Sound Beach show the hamlet received 24 inches of snow, while Rocky Point got 21. Saturday morning totals in Shoreham and Mt. Sinai showed snowfall over two feet in the area, while totals taken Friday night show a pattern heading toward a similar accumulation.
Outages hit the area Friday night, and Long Island Power Authority crews reduced the number of outages in Rocky Point to a handful of outages. There are around 50 outages in Mt. Sinai, 30 in Miller Place and 20 in Sound Beach as of late Saturday.
Overturned Oil Truck Closes Traffic on Route 83 in Mt. Sinai
The snow started earlier Friday than many expected, and crowded roads and wet weather cause many issues, including an overturned oil truck which closed traffic on Route 83 in Mt. Sinai. There was also a small leak which was taken care of.
A 23-year-old woman, driving with her 3-week-old baby, was seriously injured after being struck head-on by an alleged drugged driver on Route 25A in Shoreham Tuesday morning. Denis Karachopan, 24, of Rocky Point, crossed over from the westbound lane and struck her head-on. Karachopan was arrested and charged with DWAI Drugs. Karachopan pleaded not guilty to all charges on Wednesday, and remains in custody until he is due back in court next Wednesday. The woman was listed in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital Friday.
Military Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing in Miller Place
A military helicopter made an emergency landing in a Miller Place sod farm on Wednesday, according to Suffolk Police and the FAA.
Suffolk County Police received a call around 2 p.m. about a possible military helicopter landing in the DeLea Sod Farm on Route 25A in Miller Place.
