Week in Review: Local Hero Honored, Country Fair Needs Funding

Take a look back at the top stories from the week that was.

The Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society Country Fair at the has been running for more than 30 years, but this year the society may not be able to fund it.

The historical society sent out letters to members warning that the Country Fair is in danger of being cut if they do not raise $2,500 by June 30. This is the first year they will not be receiving a grant from the Suffolk County Parks Department, and they can not fund the fair alone.

Miller Place Volunteer and NYFD Captain Jim Hay was among three honored Wednesday for a rescue from a burning house in Queens last July, according to a report in Newsday.

Hay, a 29-year FDNY veteran, was honored at FDNY Medal Day at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan, where he recalled the rescue of Eric Broomfield, 35, from the bathtub in his smoke-filled apartment, according to the report.

After getting drafted by the New York Yankees in 2009, Miller Place High School grad and Canisius alum Kevin Mahoney has climbed the ranks to the 'AA' Trenton Thunder and is making a name for himself.

Almost three months after it was announced that the Town of Brookhaven , it was announced that an appeal by the owner has been denied by the New York State Supreme Court.

This all but ends the Town's fight to keep big box development out of the property, with the developer having last opportunity to ask the NYS Court of Appeals to hear its appeal. According to a release by the Town, the Court of Appeals "rarely grants such motions."

An accident at Echo Avenue and Pipe Stave Hollow Road in Miller Place Sunday morning sent three to the hospital with various injuries.

According to First Assistant Chief Kyle Markott, the MPFD was just finishing up assisting with the annual Joe Keany Run when they were sent to the scene with one person reported unconscious and trapped in the vehicle.
