Week in Review: Local Man's Body Found, EMT Recognized, Burglar Stabbed

A look at the top headlines from the week that was.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of Joseph Chancellor of Rocky Point, whose body was found at the Eastern Resources Recycling center in Yaphank Thursday morning.

Chancellor, 42, was found among refuse by employees at 6:55 a.m, Police said.  The body and refuse had just been discarded at the facility by a garbage truck.

A West Hempstead man was arrested Friday for allegedly engaging in criminal sex acts with a child he met on the website CraigsList.

Suffolk County Police arrested David Boutin, 42, of West Hempstead, at 3:41 p.m. on Aug. 17 at the Long Island Power Authority property, located north of Route 25A in Shoreham.

A Farmingville resident didn't take too kindly to his home being burglarized Monday afternoon.

The homeowner stabbed a burglar who was attempting to flee through the backyard of the home on Cedar Oaks Avenue, police said.

The homeowner, whom police did not identify, arrived home at about 2:15 p.m. and saw Alex Debono, 20, of Miller Place, exiting the window, police said. The homeowner grabbed a knife from his car and "confronted the intruder," who was also armed with a knife, police said.

Matthew Inman, a web comic creator better known as The Oatmeal, has started a fundraiser on indiegogo.com to attempt to save Wardenclyffe.

The fundraiser, which Inman calls 'Let's Build a Goddamn Tesla Tower,' has a goal of $850,000. Inman states that the property is listed at $1.6 million, and the Shoreham non-profit Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe has received a matching grant from New York State of up to $850,000. If the fundraiser reaches $850,000, the total with the matching grant would be $1.7 million, enough to purchase the property.

Miller Place EMT Kyle Reitan has been presented with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) EMS Provider of the Year Award for his lifesaving response to a motorcycle accident on Yaphank Road in Miller Place last year.

Reitan was presented with this statewide award during the 140th Annual FASNY Convention in Syracuse. The 21-year-old EMT received a medal and plaque on Aug. 15 at the convention, as hundreds of firefighters and EMS providers applauded.

Bravo MP Majority, very well said.Teachers are the most protected job on the planet. Now if theyRead More could only earn that money by producing results in the classrooms like they used to. But I also blame the absent NO vote. They need to be sent a message-we need a majority no vote but that will never happen. Glad I am out of here in 2 years. Can't imagine trying to live here and pay these taxes on social security and my 401K that tanked in 2008 while I was making up the teachers loss on their pension and paying my health insurance & theirs at the same time. So boo hoo teachers you have to spend money on the kids while I spend money on you.

Spoken like a true teacher. Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
