Miller Place Deputy Superintendent Marianne Higuera will become permanent Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, the school district announced Monday.

The contract between the district’s current interim superintendent, Susan Hodun, expires June 30 and an agreement could not be reached during contract negotiations. Effective July 1, Hodun will return to her previous position as assistant superintendent, which she held from the 2006-07 school year through the 2008-09 school year.

A group of students came across the dead body of an unidentified man in the woods near the high school late Wednesday afternoon.

The students immediately told district officials, who notified the Suffolk County Police Department, according to a post on the district's website. Police homicide officials confirmed that the death has been ruled non-criminal.

Kathy Rousseau, a former Miller Place Civic President and long time community volunteer was honored at Monday's Miller Place Civic Association meeting at .

Rousseau received certificates from Civic President Woody Brown, Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner as well as Suffolk County Legis. Sarah Anker for her environmental contributions and other accomplishments in her 20-plus years in Miller Place.

For more than 11 years, Patent Pending, a pop punk band from Mount Sinai, has honed their sound from a self-described “awkward, terrible” first attempt in high school to opening for acts like Gym Class Heroes, Bowling For Soup and the Vans Warped Tour.

Now the band from Mount Sinai High School has captured the national spotlight by winning the 2012 Billboard Magazine Battle of the Bands competition.

Zere Real Estate has won a settlement with AVR Realty over commission for the lease deal after a five-year dispute, according to a report on LIBN.com.

Zere’s senior managing director Paul Caiola said he introduced Planet Fitness to the 11,000-square-foot space ithat AVR Realty was representing.
