Week in Review: Student Dies in Crash, Brush Fires Rage

Rocky Point teen Ryan Baumgartner was killed in a crash at 1:24 a.m. Saturday and the driver, Thomas Smith, 20, of Ridge, was arrested on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs, Suffolk County police said. Smith was to be released Sunday after being arraigned.

The Shoreham-Wading River School District last week unanimously adopted a budget of $62,657,081 with a tax levy increase of 1.75 percent.

The levy of $48,309,435 is an increase that stays under the New York State mandated cap of two percent, which means the budget will only have to pass by the normal majority of 50 percent plus one. Despite staying under the cap, the budget retains all programs.

The Suffolk County Water Authority has identified hundreds of acres of land not needed for future water needs, and a parcel of land on Harrison Avenue in Miller Place is one of six properties now up for sale.

The land in Miller Place is the smallest of the properties, a .8-acre parcel bordering Harrison, 15th Street and Tyler Avenue.

When the in the Ridge area Monday, the Miller Place Fire Department and other local departments got the call around 2:30 p.m., and didn't leave until Tuesday morning.

The MPFD left at midnight Tuesday after a day of work that resulted in one injury. Markott said one firefighter was transported to with a minor arm injury and was released after an hour or so.

The Sprint store once located next to in the Shopping Center in Miller Place is the latest cell phone store to close down in Miller Place, following the earlier in the year.

The 1,200 square-foot location is now available for rent by Sabre Real Estate Group.
