Our House

The love between and house and a human. And a human and a house.

Looking back, I think my husband and I may have been a little crazy when we bought our house in 2006. They say love is blind, I say homebuying is blind, when you are in love.

Thank God my husband is handy because that little house turned out to be a very big mess.

Was it the best decision we could have made? Maybe not. Do I regret it? Absolutely not. That little house has taught me more then any McMansion ever would. And it has captured my heart and my soul in a way no other combination of wood and concrete ever could.

It's home to me. And there is no place else in the world that has shown me so much peace.

Before we closed on our house, I wrote a little poem about  it. It's a little corny, I know. But, then again, so am I.

A little crazy, a little corny, but together, My husband, the House and I, we make a good story.

I was a tiny house,
I sat by the sea.
I was feeling sad,
Wondering if people were done loving me.

When the sun was out,
My owners would come and stay.
But when the leaves would fall,
They would go away.

Each year I would wait,
With hopes that they would see,
What a fabulous year round home,
I could really be.

As time went on,
I saw my owner’s less.
Their winter home had finally won.
I started to look like a mess.

My shingles began to sag,
And I was sure my end was near.
I would hear the other homes giggle,
I would just stand there and tear.

Then one day I heard some voices!
Yes, I heard them loud and clear.
I heard, "Tom, I could have a garden", and,
"Jenn, I could make music here".

Jenn came with her cleaning products,
Tom came with his tools,
I heard the other houses snicker,
Ha,ha! Those two must be fools!

But Jenn said, "I can't believe it".
Tom said, "Our time has come".
We will live here all year long.
Not only in the sun.

A new roof, clean floors.
They even bought me french doors!
Little by little, they tuned up my clothes.
I was looking good from my steps up to my windows.

Then one day, heard someone drive by,
They said, wow, that house is nice!
I heard the house next door grumble,
Last summer people didn’t look twice.

Now I proudly stand,
A house by the sea.
I am so grateful.
Those two dreamers rescued me.
