Home Heating Oil "Sludge"

Description of home heating oil sludge.

There are many problems that may occur to your home heating equipment while heating your home on Long Island.  One thing that can cause a multitude of problems is home heating oil "tank sludge".

Home heating oil impurities or "Sludge" for short are particles that get trapped in your oil tank.  Sludge is comprised of multiple types of impurities in your tank.  The two types of impurities that cause tank sludge are water and solid particles.

Water can enter your tank in multiple ways. Condensation and leaking manhole covers are the top two culprits. Another culprit is buying home heating oil from non-reputable discount home fuel companies.  These companies will purchase home heating oil from the cheapest seller and not care about quality. Parkside Fuel cares about its home heating oil quality and only purchases its fuel from reputable suppliers for home oil delivery to our customers.  We do this while offering the best priced home heating oil on Long Island.

The problems and damage that tank sludge can cause are many. Oil filter clogging, line clogging, "Fire-o-Matic" safety valve clogs, oil burner nozzle clogging, internal strainer clogging, premature fuel pump failure and oil burner failure are just some of the problems that occur due to tank sludge.  Although the problems and damage caused vary they all lead to potentially costly repairs, home heating failure and wasted burner efficiency.

Parkside Fuel stands by national recommendations that, the only way to truly combat tank sludge, is through complete replacement of the affected oil tank. Once you have a new oil tank installed using proper additives to prevent sludge is recommended.  If oil tank replacement is not currently an option our highly trained service technicians are able to perform  temporary home heating services such as "blowing out" the lines to minimize the damages sludge can cause.  It is imperative that line blowouts are performed by a trained oil service technician as it is very dangerous to do it yourself.
