How is Home Heating Oil Made?

The term oil is a very broad term and covers a large variety of forms.  The oil that we will be covering is Home Heating Oil.  Home heating oil is the oil that your oil burner uses to heat your home.  How is home heating oil made?

Home Heating oil is a form of petroleum distillate.  Petroleum is the "oil" that you hear about on the news and is sometimes referred to as "crude oil".  There are numerous reasons we use home heating oil in your home oil burner. The environment, burner wear, and the money in your wallet all benefit due to the distillation process home heating oil goes through before reaching your home.

Home Heating Oil is first pumped out of the ground in varying locations throughout the world.  The United States sources oil from all over the world and is not completely dependent on any particular country to meet its home heating and other oil needs.

Once oil is acquired, its begins its first process of being transformed into the home heating oil you use in your home at the oil refinery. Oil refineries take the crude oil and separate them into "fractions". Fractions are different weights of fuel oil that are suitable and most efficiently used for different purposes. There are six different weights of fuel oil that are defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and are numbered from lightest(1) to heaviest(6). The heaviest weights are the cheapest and the lighter weights are more expensive. Home heating oil is called Number 2 Fuel oil.

After the refineries are done with the crude oil you are left with Number 2 Fuel Oil (Home Heating Oil) that can be used for your home heating needs.
