Blog: Best Ways to Not Gain Weight this Holiday Season

Worried that the Santa suit will fit you a little too well this year? Will your little black dress will be too little? Check out some of these tips to keep you looking your holiday finest!

It’s that time of year when everyone is making out their list of what they want for Christmas. But the thing that is on the top everyone’s list is something they don’t  want. . .extra pounds! Here are a few ways to help you achieve that most desired status.

Top Ways to Not Gain Weight this Holiday Season

  1. Stay Hydrated – dehydration will make you think you are hungry, when you are actually thirsty! But avoid liquid calories – make sure you hydrate with water.
  2. Get out and see the lights displays – but don’t go in the car.  Walk through a residential neighborhood with wide streets and view the lights.  If it’s cold bundle up and enjoy the magic of the all the lights underneath the starry sky. BONUS. . .you will create a wonderful memory and the kids won’t be fighting for a view from the backseat.
  3. Go to bed on time – don’t stay up late making cookies you shouldn’t be eating! Depriving yourself of sleep will lead to late night munchies and throw your weight control hormones off balance.
  4. Spice it up – throw some hot pepper flakes or ginger on you veggies or some cumin or cayenne pepper on your skinless chicken or fish. These spices are shown to boost metabolism.
  5. Find new holiday treats – leave a bowl of super sweet clementines out on the table or cut up a fresh pineapple and leave it in the fridge for a quick snack when you are feeling tempted. Instead of providing a heavy plate of cookies while trimming the tree, set out a bowl of fresh strawberries and dark chocolate for dipping.
  6. Exercise – no time to hit the gym for an hour?  Try two 10-15 minute interval training sessions at home.  You will still benefit from a post exercise boost in metabolism.
  7. Don’t skip meals! - You will only be hungrier later which will result in overeating.  If you will be out all day shopping, pack a few healthy snacks so that your angry stomach doesn’t send you careening off the road to a fast food drive-thru.
  8. Eat a small snack before the party – preferably a food with some protein like lowfat yogurt, a small serving of almonds (as in 10 or 12 not a full cup), an apple with a tablespoon of lowfat peanut butter.
  9. Don’t be nuts for nuts – nuts can be a great source of protein, but in moderation. Watch the serving size and make sure you are staying away from nuts that are ultra high in fat. Almonds and pistachios are better choices than macadamias or Brazil nuts.
  10. Indulge in moderation – of course you can eat those special treats. . .in moderation. The first bite is always the best, so enjoy a bite or two of grandma’s pecan pie, then discard the rest (yes, REALLY!)

With a little bit of thought and the smallest amount of planning, you can enjoy the festivities of this wonderful season without regret come January!
