SEPTA or SERC?

"It takes a Village to raise a child!"

Last night I attended my first SERC meeting. Yes, my first! As a busy Mom involved in Girl Scouts, church activities, and being the house taxi driver...I totally overlooked this one! The reason for my blog is to help raise awareness on the things going on around town and to help people learn to advocate for themselves.

When it comes to our children in school, advocating is an important part of parenting. Last night, I learned that having a SERC (Special Education Review Committee) in place is just as good as having a SEPTA (Special Education Parent Teacher Association). In a nutshell, it was a group of parents, grandparents and teachers uniting together to discuss the present condition of our Special Education Department in the Rocky Point School District.

This Special Education Review Committee is not only in place for children in special education with IEP's, 504's, but also includes the gifted and talented, children with medical issues and/or allergies.

After the decision not to replace Eileen Manitta, (the Special Education Coordinator) to save the district money, it seems many residents are upset at the disarray in the "redistribution" of job duties in the district.

As soon as I know the date of the next SERC meeting, I will post it. It is important to educate yourself, advocate for your children, correction, "our" children.  There is power in numbers. Remember, "It takes a Village to raise a child".

"It takes a Village to raise a child". No, it takes a reasonably strict set of parents.

Let me rephrase that, It takes a village to EDUCATE a child. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!
