Despite Sandy's Disruptions, Should Campaigns Be Picking Up Signs?

Some local political candidates still have campaign signs around town.

There was no doubt in the days leading up to Election Day that Hurricane Sandy disrupted political campaigns. But now that it has passed, do you think the signs should be removed immediately, or do you feel there are there more pressing priorities in light of the storm?

Bill Faulk, a representative for Brookhaven town supervisor-elect Ed Romaine, said the campaign staff has plans to remove the signs as soon as possible. "We've asked our campaign volunteers to retrieve all outstanding signs and either return them to HQ or keep them at home," he said. "Our effort to remove them began the day after Election Day."

What do you think? Are the signs a nuisance? Log in to Patch and share your opinion as a comment below.

Why don't one of these newly elected officials make a law that imposes fines to any campaign that does not pick them up after X days? They are annoying and they look like crap.

Election signs, big or small, are a bane on the environment. Every year the proliferation of signs grows lgreater......front lawns, corners, right-of-ways and even on Village property (triangle on High Street, in particular). Many are posted months before election day which just adds to the problem. I believe there should be more control and most definitely on the removal of signs following the big day itself.

They never pick them up, storm or no storm. Of course they are not going to create a law to fine themselves, because they all do it! Would be nice to see a 10k fine per sign left 3 days after the election. Watch how fast they would be cleaned up then!
