Community Corner

Divide Between Citizen and Government Continues to Grow

Nassau cop Richard Hefferon gets community service and a fine and keeps his job after pulling gun and pointing it at bartender for no justifiable reasons.

I'm a very fair (overly perhaps) person.  This cop has 19 years on the job.  Lets give him a bonus years so he has his 20 (full pension) and send him on his way.  He should no longer be "on the job" and permitted to carry a gun ever again.

I can see the judge giving this guy a break, but for the NCPD to take him back is just plain wrong and is a smack in the face to the people NCPD serves.  But of cause you are just a civilian to them.

By the way "civilian" is a "dirty word" used in the looking down sense from the exalted level of "officer of the law".  Too many of them no longer see "service to the citizen" as "job one".  "Job one" now is "whatever it takes to make it home at the end of the tour".  I normally quote things that are open to interpretation and/or may have different meanings to others. But those quotes above are there because those are the actual words spoken by many in law enforcement.

Does anyone here doubt P.O. Hefferon has pulled his gun in the past and pointed at people unnecessarily?  Most people don't get caught the first time they do something.  Brandishing a weapon is against the law for the common folk, but provisions of that law shall not apply to police officers.  So we can be rather confident Hefferon enjoyed that freedom in the past.

Shame on the NCPD for not being proactive with this officer.

The judge ordered  him to continue substance abuse therapy and pay a $500 fine and do 150 hours of community service.

Does anyone here believe a non-governmental / non-police officer - even if permitted to carry-  would have gotten off this lightly?  At best the non-governmental worker would be denied carry in NYS for life, probation and some "community service".  This officer will not be permitted to carry off-duty for only 2 years and I'm sure after he retires he will apply and receive his golden carry pass in the civilian world.

The class warfare's between Rich and Poor, government official and non-government official, and the common folk and those "too big to fail" is growing at an exponential rate.

The immediate future is not a pretty one.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
