Community Corner

Do Maasai boys still kill lions and drink their blood?

You will have an opportunity to hear from the Chief of 5000 Maasai members of Kenya, East Africa at Port Jefferson Library on Friday, April 11 at 7 pm. (FREE and OPEN to all). There will be plenty of time for your questions, and you will be fascinated by Chief Joseph ole Tipanko and his associates during an hour presentation, Q&A, and opportunity to purchase native jewelry and other objects.

Chief Joseph is touring schools, libraries and private venues throughtout the US to share his ancient indigenous culture, traditions, and values, which emphasize family commitment, community responsibility, and dedication to the environment, peace, and human rights. This is a huge challenge to navigate in a changing world.

In recent years, the Tanzanian and Kenyan governments have instituted programs to encourage the Maasai to abandon their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, and the people are struggling to comply while holding on to their rich culture. Chief Joseph will explain his efforts to maintain a permanent village: establishing schools, sanitation, infrastructure, medical availability, etc. At the same time, he is devoted to maintaining the values and traditions of the rich Maasai culture.
