Think Pink!!

Think pink…… How nice! Better think twice….. Here's some advice.

Think pink…… How nice!
Better think twice…..
Here’s some advice.

It’s that time of year, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and each year the stories of local fundraising efforts grow.

Everyone is doing their part to raise awareness and money to fight Breast Cancer. Schools, clubs, sports teams, salons and grocery stores all are collecting a dollar at a time in our small town. Where do all of those dollars go?

Most of it is going to the big three: The American Cancer Society, Komen for the Cure and The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. We have all heard about them and the MILLIONS of dollars they raised here on Long Island in the fight against Breast Cancer.

How about the North Shore Neighbors Breast Cancer Coalition or The LI 2Day Walk? Heard of them? Probably not….

That’s because there’s no advertising budget that allows us to print two-page glossy ads in popular magazines or star studded television commercials on all of the big networks. We don’t have the NFL sporting our logos on their jerseys and pink cleats. We are word of mouth organizations. The social worker at the Breast Cancer Center at Stony Brook has our number on speed dial. The American Cancer Society will even give you my number if you need transportation to your six weeks of radiation appointments. But you’ve never heard of us.

I know some people who have heard of us. Your neighbor whose clothes dryer crapped out midway through treatment of her second bout with Breast Cancer, or a former co-worker who lost her job after her diagnosis and needed assistance to pay her overwhelming utility bills.

The lady on line in front of you buying groceries with a gift card. A nice lady whose only wish after her double mastectomy was to have a comfortable mattress to sleep on each night. Or the boy in your child’s class who slept in a warm house last night because his mom was finally able to have their oil burner repaired.

That house you drive by where the Teresa’s family cleaning car is parked for two hours twice each month.
Who helps these people? Komen for the Cure? Avon? or The American Cancer Society? Guess again...We do.

The North Shore Neighbors is a local grassroots organization whose mission is to offer support to local families fighting breast cancer. We receive 90 percent of our funding from The LI2DayWalk which is held in June each year. 100 percent of the money that LI2Day raises, almost four million to date, stays right here on Long Island. LI 2Day provides funding for grass roots organizations like North Shore Neighbors across Long Island.

Now you know who we are and what we do...so when you start to think pink and want to do something to help, think about us. Help your neighbors. Keep it local.
