After Leaving From Rocky Point Sunday, Boaters Rescued Monday Morning

Three boaters rescued near coast in Connecticut after leaving from Rocky Point a day earlier.

Three boaters, who left Rocky Point Sunday afternoon, were rescued from their 8-foot inflatable boat five miles east of New Haven Harbor, Conn., Monday morning.

The Coast Guard received a call from Suffolk County Police Department, reporting that a woman had called to report her husband, son and nephew had left Rocky Point Sunday at 2 p.m. and were due back at 10 p.m. but had not yet returned.

The guard then launched a 45-foot rescue boat crew from Station New Haven, Conn., a 45-foot rescue boat from Station Eaton’s Neck, N.Y., and a HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass.

The Jayhawk rescue crew found the three boaters and safely brought them aboard the aircraft. They were taken to Tweed New Haven Airport where EMS was awaiting to transfer them to Yale New Haven Hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.

"What can start out as a nice day on the water, can end up being a life or death situation with fast moving inclement summer weather," said Petty Officer 1st Class Timothy J. Halverson, watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center in New Haven.
